08 GT hood scoop removal

I want to remove the factory fake hood scoop on my 08 GT. Is the hood painted underneath?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

It is.

There will be some issues you need to consider, if you don't know...

The paint under the scoop will probably be a different shade than the rest of the hood. This happens because the area under that scoop doesn't get hit with anything, protected from the elements and such.

The holes used to secure the scoop are going to be there. They'll have to be filled and the hood repainted. And you had best find a seriously good body shop to do that, because aluminum is notoriously difficult to repair in such ways. It does not like to have paint/primer stick unless it's prepped *perfectly*. Not even McLaren can do it right from the factory, see the below video regarding. Just so you know. Not to mention the body tape used to ensure no vibrating used on top of the fasteners used to secure the scoop has to be removed, but after all that, that's not a huge deal really... as long as the paint doesn't lift...

If the idea is to make the hood smooth, the options are to do the above filling, or find a 'new' unscooped hood and have it repainted (if it's not the correct color), or get a new plastic one from Cervinis or such... the problem is they don't much do 'stock', everything has a scoop or a cowl or whatnot involved.

Hope that helps.

Hoovie's McLaren woes, which includes the 'hood rust' our cars get, and they won't even fix it. McLaren. Lotta money and they can't do it right and won't fix it... sounds familiar...

Thanks for the info. I figured there would be a difference in the paint due to fading, and some kind of vibration insulator. It doesn't have to be a stock hood, I just would rather not have a fake scoop. I have seen the Cervini hoods and they're nice, and I'd love to have a hood that does a good job venting heat from the engine compartment. I did see one company that sold painted hoods, might have been Cervini. How do they compare in weight? Regardless, it sounds like it'll be quite an expense unless I can find someone with a nice hood of the same color and no scoop, and see if they'll trade.

As far as weight, anything but the original is going to be heavier, because either steel (they do... did? I don't know anymore... exist, a stock looking steel one) or plastic is going to weigh more... except maybe a carbon fiber one.

That said, I didn't hesitate to get a Cobra R hood for my '06 GT, 3" riser cowl, which will extract heat from the back through the two 'slots' back there. I love it's look, truly, best lookin' after market hood out there for our models, ya ask me.

But that concept one is nice, and there's a few others like a Colt that aren't bad, but everyone's different, yes? Yes.

And all are going to be somewhat expensive. Some deals can be had from ebay though, or used to be, so maybe there with a Duraflex or other... buyer beware though, even with a Cervini. It's... not... exact... Will be some fitment to do here and there.

Again, hope that helps!
