They gave in to a salary cap but it's 12 mil ( 52 mil ) more than the owners want (40 mil) and not have it tied to revenue. The owners want it tied to revenue so if it does not work out they can lower it so the owners rejected it. The talked until the wee hours this morning. Apperently it's the last hurdle.

I sure hope they work something out. I am not a basketball fan. So there are no real sports going on for me right now.

I was surprise to hear this from this thread. Last I heard they called a conference to cancel the season. I guess that conference never happened.

I really doubt there will be hockey this year...

IMO they need to start from scratch,

new rules, get rid of 4 teams or more, get rid of both Bettman and Goodenow.

What's scary is rumours of a billionaire willing to finanace a European super-leauge, which would pay NHL money, that would dilute the talent pool significantly.

If it happens they are talking about a 28 game season, at least every game will be meaningful. It will be a sprint to the playoffs. I don't think the owners will get rid of bettman. He is schooling the NHLPA.

I agree there needs to be less teams. It's killing the level of play.

It's over, there will not be a NHL season. Press conference will go at 1pm

"Sporting News Radio said NHLPA president Trevor Linden told them there's no hope left and that the season will be canceled." :notnice:

It took America's pastime about 5-6 years to recover from their strike,

The NHL is not one of the major sports in the United States, it will recover quickly in hockey cities, but the damage will be severe and long term. It will take 10-15 years to recover.

And I don't know if baseball would have recovered in that short of time if it wouldn't have been for the homerun chase in '98.

Yeah, and Jose Canseco is a credible witness.

A black day in sports history...Its gonna drive me crazy not having the playoffs in the spring!! Im gonna have to talk to the wife now!!!! :bang: Oh the humanity!!! But seriously floks...This could get really ugly now. What drives me crazy is the 2 sides will sit on their fat ***** until next fall, then start talking again!!! Sure I understand the need for a break but lets get to it, get it done during the summer so we don't have to go through this bs again!!!

for non Canadians, some of the best hockey articles can be found in the Sports Section of the Toronto Sun and its associate papers

Really depends who you ask.

Most think it is the player's union, because Bob Goodenow thought he could win the stare-down and the owners would cave.

Others blame Gary Bettman because he did not want to negotiate off of the player's December 9th proposal.

I personally blame both, because there was never really any attempt to negotiate a settlement. There has been nothing but posturing and animosity.

The players should know that they cannot continue getting the big paydays (the owner's fault). At the same time, the owners cannot expect the players have their salaries directly linked to revenues if they don't make the game exciting enough to generate strong TV deals and interest from the public.

Looks like there is another faint-hope meeting in the works More Talks
