Or maybe we just can find better ways to spend our money. So your MSRP is about $15k more than a stock GT. Well the extra 25 hp you have can easily be made up with a CAI, underdrive pulleys, exhaust upgrade and a tune; about $1k there. I can considerably upgrade the suspension for about $1k. You can get full body kits for the Mustang for less than $2k. Good set of rims and tires, about $2k. Is a number on your bumper really worth $10k?
Trouble is, unless you have a very good eye for design, your version will probably look like a dog's breakfast, and the components won't have been designed from the ground up to work integrally together for the most holistic dynamic performance.

Plus, you'll never get your money out of the upgrades, while the Saleen better retains its value.

I just bought an 05 Saleen. Seems it's always the folks who CAN'T afford the stuff they trash. I think the Saleen looks way better than the Shelby and that's why I bought it.

The lines are cleaner, the name is exclusive, and the sound sweet.

Like all fine things, you must try before you have something useful to say. Hope to post pics soon too! It's a Screaming Yellow S-281 (non-supercharged, but still hot to the touch!) and it's -- REALLY! -- an automatic.
I, too, love the looks of the Saleen - a lot, actually. My problem with the car is that it is too much money for too little performance increase. Sure, it'll out handle a GT at the upper limits, but on the drag strip the Saleen has actually tested SLOWER.

Then there's the same cheap interior plastics - the Shelby is supposed to use large dollops of leather on the dash and door surfaces.

Finally, I don't know what after sales service is going to be like on a Saleen, especially once the warranty is up. What will be the cost of servicing Saleen's specialty components, and how readily available will that service be?

With the Shelby, you should be able to just drop into any Ford dealer coast to coast (no matter where you are) and get things taken care of, if necessary.

Finally, no matter how exclusive the Saleen may seem, the name pales when compared to the history and legacy of "Shelby."

It is interesting that whenever people ask about performance, Saleen owners/admirers always bring up looks to justify the price.

Well, $1,000 suspension + $1,500 Saleen body kit, + $2,000 well chosen aftermarket parts (exhaust, intake, etc.) + $2,000 install can get you the same looking, same (or better) performing car for $5 - $10k less.

How is that a good value?

Ummm, I never said I was designing my own body kits(actually I have no intention of buying a body kit because I think they all take away from what makes the new Mustang great, I am only interested in minor cosmetic changes like a chin spoiler, rear window louvers, ect...) and IMO the Saleen looks like dog vomit. I would only buy items specifically designed for the '05. I never said I would take random parts for any car. Heck, I can buy the Saleen suspension for $1,000. And like I said 25 hp is not that hard to get with this engine. Argue all you want, but I can get my GT to perform as well if not better than the N/A Saleen for $10k less. You can add that $10k to my resale value and see how it matches up in a few years.

I hate this argument. Mainly because I have never looked at resale value of a car when considering buying one. If you are buying a car only to be thinking about selling it, then why are you buying it in the first place. I say only buy a car that moves you and you have no thoughts of ever selling it.

Not to mention I doubt that they paid sticker, probably a nice "market adjustment" to be added in that difference.

For those of you wanting to have a Saleen for much less money heres the Saleen Body Kit direct from Saleen for $1599.99 .

I am one of the 50% who love the style and think its a great looking addition to the 2005.

I am also one of the 90% that thinks Saleen has priced themselves out of reality.

Making a point at the expense of the less fortunate who even face to face would not be able to counter. What a man! Your showcasing is indeed impressive.

It may not be the best value, you can always DIY for less (as with just about anything). The factor you are leaving out is convenience. If I've got the money, I want a ready-to-go car now, I don't want to waste time having body panels mounted and painted, badging replaced, all the suspension swapped out, etc.

It all depends on perspectives. Personally, I plan on using some of their parts, but not that MOPAR looking rear they've created.

An S281 would qualify as "a human's misfortune" in a very real sense, however self-induced. I should feel empathy then, for Saleen buyers.

Hope your daughter is doing well,Jess.
