Maybe because the new F-150 came out 1 year before the new Mustang??? That's my guess.
Not likely.

They are trying to move the MY2004 SVT models - the last year for the current body style of both vehicles. There is no logical reason to say that the replacement for one model will be here any earlier than the other. Unless, of course, its actually the truth.

For those who doubt the validity of this memo I can appreciate that. However, the way they have handled the new Mustang's launch and marketing so far looks as though Ford took it straight from the BMW "How to Launch a New Car" handbook which is why I think it is the real deal.

I know I have said Ford is taking a BMW approach to the new Mustang's launch before. But, if you aren't familiar with how BMW markets cars you can't appreciate it as much. It isn't just BMW "like", it is so close that BMW marketing may as well be handling the new Mustang's intro and launch...no joke.

The reason I don't doubt the memo is it sounds exactly like a typical BMW move too. It is text book BMW and is exactly how BMW handles a premium model intro. (with a little polish that comes from experience missing) The evidence points to this being pretty accurate IMHO.

I guess we will see how it all shakes out over the course of the next year. Honestly, i am more interested in a new special edition Mustang than the Cobra anyway. The Cobra will be awesome, i'm sure, but if it costs over $40K, then i won't be looking at it anyway. My hope is that we will see a S/C'd Mustang close to the current Cobra's price and performance within 6 to 10 months of the '05 Mustang's launch. That is the car that would get me to trade up. I may only be dreaming, but i hope not.

I have to agree with you. I was hoping to be able to move up to the Cobra with my next Mustang purchase, but if it is beyond 40,000...forget about it. And the only reason I wanted the Cobra was for the independent rear suspension. So my hope for any new Special Edition is that it has IRS.

Come on Ford...you gave the drag racers the GT and a Mach 1...why not throw us road racers a bone huh?

For anyone doubting the validity of the offer...don't. I've already confirmed the offer with 4 different dealers.

As i stated above, this is real. I called SVT. We discussed the terms of the "power lease" He also confirmed the June (ish) '06 cobra release. The lease is a scheme to sell more '04s, but the release is real.

In case you didn't read it in the other post:

I called the SVT people about the next Cobra. Nice guy, wouldn't give any details. He did, however, confirm the 2007MY rumor (expecting spring '06 production with about June '06 release as '07MY). I asked if any detail had been released. He said no. I said " you know though don't you." He laughed and said "we know what direction we want to go. Some changes are still being made." Me "is it going to be more powerful?" Him (almost with a tooltime grunt) "Oh, yeah"

yeah, I was pleased to hear it, too. recently I read a post saying only 400-420 hp 4.6 for the Cobra. I didn't get that feeling from him.

when has SVT released their model on the first year of a new platform? Remember 99 was just a body change for the Stang....

SVT didn't exist on the last platform change. 1979.

They did offer a cobra in 1994 didn't they? That was a major change.

The Cobra's first production year was 1993, also first year of the Cobra 'R'(107).
What I can't figure out is why someone would doubt a memo from Tom Scarpello unless they don't know who he is. Seems to me like a good way to move more Cobras and Lightnings. The only people who have problems with leasing are the ones who don't know anything about it. Let's see, they're offering you a chance to lease an SVT model until the new ones come out, you won't have any negative equity at lease end , and you have first option on SVT product. I wish I had the money to do it. With the prices of vehicles now a days I don't understand why more people don't lease, especially if you trade every 2-3 years.

I'm not sure who doubted the validity of the memo. I didn't. I was simply stating in my first post, that it was possible this memo was meant for only the sales people at Ford dealerships.

My thinking was that this was an internal tool to convince buyers to go ahead and lease a current SVT product, instead of waiting for the 2006MY. I was mainly just curious as to whether or not Ford would be issuing a press release stating the Cobra has been pushed back until 2007. If they don't issue any sort of public release about this, then i thought it was possible that this memo was never supposed to be public.

I understand that when you speak with a sales rep or someone on the phone about this, they are going to say exactly what the memo tells them to say. I guess i want to hear it stated directly from Ford to the general public. The last public statement made by Ford concerning the Cobra was that it was slated for the 2006MY.

So, until i hear it directly from the horse's mouth, so to speak, i will have some skepticism. Of course, we may have just stumbled on the truth earlier than Ford intended. Either way, i am sure the Cobra will be impressive. Whether we see it in a year, or two years.

There was a 94 SVT Cobra produced with the brand new 94 SN95 Mustang.

Admittedly, it shared the same basic powertrain with the 93 model.

is there anything in there about being able to buy the SVT you are leasing if you don't like the new model when it comes out (as in bodystyle, performance, price . . . or whatever reason)?

I would assume it works like any other lease. You have the option at the end of it to buy the car outright, or finance the rest of what is owed. I don't think signing this lease means you absolutely must trade in on a new Cobra, when it comes out.

They had it on the Fox in 93, the early 94 5.0 had very few differences then the GT with the same motor from the 93.

It says in the memo that you do not have to buy the new Cobra. You can buy out the residual, lease/buy another vehicle or walk away at lease end.
