I am sure you are thinking of side scoops and quarter window scoops. Well, quarter window scoops were functional insofar as they let air into the rear of the car. not much of a function there. The side scoops let air to the rear brakes, which is a decent performance function. However, according to Hau-Thai-Tang, they considered these sorts of functional scoops but decided against them as they would kill the car's aerodynamics. Doesn't seem worth it to me.
