Ford to drop Cobra name - Shelby replaces it

I hope your right.. However, can you expound on the short comings of the car, for those who were not aware please? Thanks! I personally thought it was perfect.. I thought an IRS would have been nice.. So I guess I can view this as a short coming.. Interested in your meaning though..
Also, I would have preferred to see a 5.8L Supercharged engine as opposed to a 5.4L..

Then are other things like reducing the wheels from 19" to 18" (admittedly not a BIG deal), the love-it-or-leave-it hood "scoops," the likelihood that the leather interior panels will be dropped, and a complete dirth of creature comforts that one can find in a Corvette C6 for a little more money (less money, in fact, if dealers gouge on the Shelby).

Um thats Daytona Coupe, not Daytona Cobra.
Um thats Daytona Coupe, not Daytona Cobra.
The actual name of the coupe was:
Cobra FIA Daytona Coupe
There were only 6 of them built, even though the FIA GT class required 100 cars / year to be built inorder to race them in the GT class.
A loop hole in the FIA rules regarding the "World Manufacturers Championship GT Class" allowed for "special" bodywork on FIA homolongated GT cars. Underneath the fancy aluminum skin, the Daytona Coupes was a regular 289 Roadster. The body also shows how far the rules could be bent back in those days.

welp I'm glad the Cobr...ooops GT500 will have as much HP as it does cause it will need it with that giant S-H-E-L-B-Y on th trunk lid. Must be like 500lbs of plastic there.
BTW how is it legit? because fords marketing guys called it that?? Or because shelby built it??? oops that's right he didn't SVT did.
anyhow

I can hardly wait to polish my cobra....in the grill of my Shelby.
Come on folks ... wake up and smell the coffee. This was done for one reason and one reason only. MONEY
If anyone out there thinks that they are going to get their hands on one of these baby's for less than 20K markup is smoking something.
How soon we forget the first year with the Terminator. Don't you remember the $5, $10 and $15k markups? I personally saw upwards of $15k markup on these things. I even walked away from a dealer 3 months after intro with CASH IN HAND and he wouldn't budge on the markup.
SVT and Cobra should stay together. What do you think built a reputation for high performance at Ford these past 10+ years?
Hey .... I got an idea .... why don't we drop the Mustang name .... It's only a name ...right ?

2. If I'm wrong here, maybe you can hook me up with some of the stuff you are smoking, but:
Do you also remember that at 4 months they were calling all those cash in hand people back offering to sell them at or below sticker? Yes, the terminators were getting over sticker in the first few months. Before the end of the year they were selling well below sticker. Hopefully, those boneheads that overpaid learned a lesson and will wait for the car to come down to Earth.
3. SVT and Cobra have carried the reputation for Ford the last 12 years, but, Shelby built it in the first place in the '60s (as far as Mustangs go anyway). If Ford wants to use that history to sell more cars, more power to them. They need help getting out of money trouble. The more of these cars they sell, the more likely they will be around for years to come.
Using the Shelby name is no different than using Mach 1 or BOSS or any other SE name. It all refers back to the glory days of Muscle Mustangs. We should appreciate the fact that car companies are even battling over horsepower and sales again. This is a good thing. Why are so many people griping about wether it is a Cobra or a Shelby. It is still a $40k, 500hp Mustang. I don't care if they call it a Cobra or a Shelby or whatever. It is still gonna be the BADDEST factory Mustang ever. What else can we expect? 19inch wheels instead of 18s, depressed hood vents instead of raised ones, SVT on the steering wheels instead of Shebly. IMO, these are all petty things. At least they aren't putting a SC V6 instead of a V8.
I haven't even had my coffee yet.

Crazy, I do not disagree with anything that you say. I think what is really going on here with those of us that have supported SVT from the very beginning is this ..... there is a certainly justified concern that SVT will disappear from the ranks of Ford. This would be a bad thing. Unless you have owned a SVT you may not fully understand.
SVT offers something to the performance minded enthusiast more than any other manufacturer. Levels of support and participation that normal Mustang owners may never see or even be aware of.
Lately, we have seen the demise of the SVT Contour, SVT Focus, SVT Lightning and now the SVT Cobra. It is hard to deny that the writing is not on the wall.
The Cobra is (was) the flagship of the SVT brand. No one will deny that Shelby is historically important to the success of Ford, but Ford has made some decisions lately with SVT as a core brand that have affected of a lot of brand loyal customers.
Only time will tell.

I see where you are coming from and agree with most of it. The only thing I would say is the Shelby is keeping SVT alive right now. This car will be very successful, bringing more people into the SVT fold that had no idea it even existed. That kind of support will help it grow and spawn new products like the Lightning, focus and things we have even considered. I actually think this is the beginning of a new era for SVT. This is our muscle car era. To me, this car defines it. And SVT made it.

From Ford's promo material found on this site.....
On the outside, the first thing you’ll notice about the Shelby is its aggressive nose. Adapted from the 2005 Mustang GT-R prototype, the grille is shaped like the 1968 Shelby’s and SVT trademark round fog lamps are mounted low on the bumper. A functional splitter improves aerodynamics.
George brings up additional excellent points, if Ford wanted to do a photo shoot with a 67', I'm sure they could have rounded up a few. It's based off of the 68'.

Don't want to spoil your apparent fact based comments, but the 40th anniversary of the '67 would have to be a MY2006, the '07 would be the 41st.
>> well, that's just the info I have, There will be a 40th package to go with the new GT500, I know that as well. Well see when it all gets released
Also, if the new GT500 was based on the '67, Ford would not be promoting it side by side with 1968s unless Ford could not find available 1967 Shelbys for all their photo shoots.
>> again, the first year of the gt500 was 67, so 2007 makes it 40 years on model year, not release year. also the styling ques are of many models, but 67 was the first gt500
P.S. I might be mistooken but I think Ford has this crazy notion of calling the new and upcoming "shelby GT 500" the "Ford Shelby GT500".
>> I will be in detroit this week, lets see what they are calling it this week. I see no difference in "ford Shelby gt500" or Shelby gt500" both will have the ford name. My comment was in response that the "cobra" name was nolonger being used. and I will certainly be more careful here going forward if the info I give is to be disected as such.
So, thanks again, for the "comments" and I will discuss with Ford as we discuss the Gt release, that's Shelby GT, not regualr GT

Agreed, it's one cool car.

george, this will be my last comment on this, but styling que, on the grill is the reason for this picture, and when the 40th package for the new Ford GT 500 comes out, feel free to write a letter to ford and Shelby, I am sure they will be amused , since the first Gt500 was 1967
