I was previously under the assumption that we should be shifting at 5800-6000rpm, at the track at least, to keep our 4.0 in the power band. But, after having read this:

and this:

...should we be shifting sooner to protect our engines? Maybe more like 5500rpm? I'm curious about what rpm Mike shifted at to make his 11.80 run? Any ideas, thoughts, criticism?

Scrming's dyno pulls indicate his car is at 5400, I know he has an auto like me, but Lideo may have set the shift points purposely for this reason on the tune he gave him. I don't even know the shift points on my car, but now that you bring it up...I will hook up my pred and see what they are set to with my current tune.

I'm curious to see how this one goes. We learn something new all the time about these 4.0's.

I won't argue shifting sooner will protect your engine. I would say you're going to be faster shifting at 5800-6000 rpm. With a mostly stock engine, I would take it to redline. Ford says it ok and they're are conservative. If you heavily mod it, blower or turbo, 5500 rpm ain't a bad idea. I would be scared of hit the rev limiter with nitrous, so maybe short shift to avoid that.
My two cents.

It is more about the torque curve.
If you truely want to figure out your shift points and have some type of data logger, take a look at the acceleration rates and adjust them accordingly, for the most part you can feel the car "nose over" and at that point you should have shifted a bit earlier.

More noise, or rpm or speed is not more acceleration.

What rpm did you shift at for your 11.80 runs?

I'm curious about the dyno and shift points. It looks like a stock 4.0 pulls well to redline, I'm wondering what it looks like with a turbo.
