Original Tires??

This is my first post. This site totally rocks. I picked up a wingless Sonic Blue '05 this weekend..!! My other Mustang is an '03 Cobra but my wife and I decided to sell it......

My questions center around the tires. With 16k on the clock, I'm assuming the BFG Traction T/As are the original tires?? I was quite surprised today when checking my tread depth that there's only 4/32" remaining. With a treadwear rating of 620, should I be getting 60k+ miles with such hard rubber? Something just doesn't seem right. How many miles have you guys gotten with this tire?

620 the original treadwear rating? The original tires on the 17's were Pirelli's with a 440 treadwear rating. Whoops! That is a V6... then I don't know what I'm talking about and I'll shut up!

EDIT: I just found some pics of V6's, and they did come with the BFG Traction T/A's. Couldn't see the treadwear rating though.

Just remember the old saying that Original Equipment tires only have to do three things:
  1. Be Cheap
  2. Be Round
  3. Be Black
and they don't care too much about items #2 and #3. The best tire for appearance, handling, and value would be P255/50R17s on 17"x8" rims:

I think he's talking about the tires on the V6...from the pic it looks like he's got a V6 Premium coupe, but all the 05 V6's came with BFG Traction T/A's.

I don't know how well the tires on the V6 hold up, I've only got about 2800 miles on my 05 V6 vert and I replaced my wheels/tires with the GT Bullitts and the Pirelli's.

I think my V6 is a Premium coupe but not exactly sure. It does have a power driver's seat and leather.....

I've already decided to replace the original 16-inch wheels with 17's. Any recommendations on brand for a P255-50/17 tire??

If it has the 16 inch wheels (vs. the bullits from the Pony Packager) then you have BFG traction TA's. I use one for a full size spare, two I took the tires off and put DR's on them. And the last one I had I gave to a friend for a full size spare.

Other than that replace them. The GT take off Pneros are way better IMO on handling and performance.

If you can find GT takeoffs with the Pirelli's still on them, keep them, they are a great tire.

I use Les Schwab's Chrome plated 17x8 Bullitt Rims with 255/50WR-17 Hankook Tires. The have lots of tread left after 15,000 miles of wear. Great traction and just $100 per tire.
