Hey guys!! Found some good pictures of our heads, for you viewing pleasure..

Also, nice to know if we blow up our engines, we can get a brand new one for less than the cost of a S/C!! Check this out! This is a brand spankin new engine... Instead of the SC, you could buy this, and go to town on it outside of the car.. When your done, just plug it in!!

Question though, what would be the differences between this engine and the one in the Eexplorer? I have no idea, trufthfully, but it seems like there may be some base differences. But, either way, if its in good shape, it'd make a nice project for someone.

My wife had the same engine in her Explorer before she traded it last week for a F-150 SC with a 5.4V Triton V8 with 300HP and 365ftlb of TQ.

The reason I bring that up, is that in the Explorer it was always a little "rough" even when new. Not that it was a bad engine, just not as refined as some other offerings. This may have been because of the additional weight, or because of physical differences between the Explorer version and the version put into the Mustang.

Something to keep in mind and/or research more, as it seems interesting to document the differences.

Hopefully Doug can comment on this... He's the one that would be in the know Id think...

Also finding deals like that are few and far between. Maybe I should just buy that engine and blow it up first as a test dummy for our v6s....

In the earlier versions of the motor, a frequent problem was timing chains, and a few other related components to this area.. That problem has been fixed and revised with the introduction of the aluminum SOHC heads... The problems which persisted in the earlier model of the 4.0 is no longer an issue.. However, most people with Rangers and Explorers do remember the old problems, and tend to be alittle gunshy about the motor.. Thus far, there have been no reported problems..

I am confident that the valve train and timing chains are good and stable for dailey use upto 350HP... In time, we will hopefully get a chance to see a 400HP dailey driver, and see how it effects the overall reliability of the engine.. For now we just sit back and wait..

In regards to your truck Jeffery, it seems like an awfull lot of power for the Miss'es! I guess you must own a boat I presume?

Yes, 300HP is a lot ... But the truck is *HEAVY* so its not going anywhere very quickly even with that. The answer is no, no boat. I hate the water. But, I do want to tow my car.

HOWEVER, I didn't pick it out or even haggle at all. She did it all, I just had to go sign the paperwork when she called (she stays at home, you see, and that doesn't buy a truck).

Really, she just likes trucks, she wanted a truck, so she got a truck. 4x4 to boot.

Anyway, her Explorer was a 2003, so I wonder if she had the newer design. Her Explorer never much interested me, so I didn't do much research on it.

Thats a real nice truck Jeffery!! With the 5.4L triton being so popular, it makes you wonder why Ford did not allow it to be an option in the Standard GT.. They should have stuck to their old use of the LX, and made LX's 4.6's, and GT's the 5.4L Triton.. Why would Ford exclude the 5.4L Triton from the S197's? Why couldnt it be an option? In the older Stangs, Ford offered several different engines as options.. Why do they do this?

Hp is only one of Fords concerns.

Consider the 5.4 is a truck engine, cast iron block vs the aluminum 4.6 Mustang block. Both produce 300hp.

CAFE, Ford needs the highest mileage it can get out of its cars to offset trucks and SUVs.

Cost, I dont think Ford can make enough to offset the investment.

I dont hink we will ever see the 5.4 or anything any larger than the 4.6 in a Mustang GT ever again.
