4.0 V6 tune question opinions needed

Hey guys. I don't have a Mustang question, rather a question about the motor. I've modded my 06 GT to death as you can see in my signature. I'm about to pull the trigger (I think) on an 06 Explorer w/ the 4.0L V6. I've been shopping used vehicles and really wanted the V8, but the Explorer I just found has every exact option my wife and I want except for the V6. My question is this. What kind of power gains have you all experienced in your V6 Mustangs with a good tune and a cai? I was impressed with the V6 when I drove it tonight, not a dog by any means, but not quite as smooth as the V8. Will a good tune and cai give me that added "umph?" I know some of you are going to say go w/ a turbo or an s/c, but that is out of the question. I really need bang for my buck, not another expensive major mod. By the way this Explorer has 3.73 gears in it. Again, I know this isn't a Mustang question, but I could really use some advice here. I know I can count on my fellow TMS'ers for some sound advice and some colorful opinions. Thanks in advance.

Rob in Mustang, Ok

Hey Rob,
I say go for it! Get a cai and tune from Bamachips and have a tire chirping explorer! I have a v6 stang with cai and a tune from Doug and am very pleased. v6 might not be as smooth as v8, but I still get 26 mpg cruising down the interstate at 75-80 mph.

cai and tune. then the next thing would be gt take-offs and a gt rear bumper for a low-cost exhaust upgrade. after that well i would say gears and t-loc. hmmm, it's a toss-up between the last two for me, i like the look of the dual exaust and sound, however i think you'll feel/notice more performance gain from lsd and gears.

good luck

The 4.0 w/ a tune is really much better than then 4.0 w/o the tune

first of all

What year is the explorer? I've had 3 a 93 V6 160hp, 96 5.0 hauled *** and a 98 V6, so the year matters somewhere around 98 the offered a 200-210hp, I agree CAI would be a positive step, i have an 05 V6 with a C&L with a SCT xcal tune I can smoke the tires with little effort, and cruising to the Myrtle beach last year to Mustang Week with the air on, I got 29.2 mpg better then stock tune. not to mislead but, I also have JBA headers and a magnaflow dual catback, if I remember right you don't have the room under a explorer because of the gas tank, I know I couldn't on my 5.0, not totally sure about the 6's, but prob not. the 3.73 gears a good gear for it, I want some under my Stang

You can always look at the X charger from Explorer Express.
It will add some nice power to that Explorer.

Maybe they missed the word explorer in there so many times.
