Wheel spacers or steering stops?

As many of you know, Ford recommends the installation of steering stops when upgrading from 17x8" wheels to 18x8.5" or 18x9.5". I was wondering whether a similar effect (no rubbing of the tire against the wheel well, I presume) could be achieved by installing wheel spacers (I'm thinking 1" max).
Recently I started noticing a rubbing noise coming from the front left well when completely turning right. I checked the well lining and I can't see any marks anywhere. However, I'd like to widen the stance anyway, so installing the wheel spacers might solve two problems at once.
Any ideas?

I guess that all depends on the rim. I have 18x9 on the front and didn't use spacers or stops. Even when lowered the tires don't rub anywhere.

+1 If the wheels are the correct offset you won't need spacers. I have 18x9s with no issues.

If the tires rub the wheel wells, wouldn't you just unsteer the car 1/4" The old cars were notorious for this, my brain was able to handle the situation just fine.
