what wire off dimmer switch for power?

Hi,i have a 4.0 supercharged mustang.I have been trying to get my a/f guage set up.I am a complete moron with this wiring crud, lol.I am going to assume that maybe the wire colors are the same as the gt and maybe one of you guys could help me out.I already tried the orange/red stripe wire and really thought that was it and maybe it is?but i get no lights on guage.I do get lights running a wire direct to battery, but of course i don't want an "always on" power source and want it to dim according to the instrument panel lights. The guage is an autometer sport comp. Thanks ahead-

does your a/f meter have lighting? that is the same gauge i have and it is only LEDs.... i think.

anyways, it is the black/white wire that is connected to the dimmer switch. that is what i have my boost/vac and fuel pressure tied into.

hmm... try double checking your instructions. i don't think the a/f has a wire for lighting for the sport comp. my instructions don't say anything about it.

i might be wrong, but i don't think you can dim it.

edit: oh never mind... you must have the narrow band. mine is the wideband and i don't have the lighting.

i just read the instructions for the narrow band and that one does have dash lighting.

Mine's a wideband.I just looked the instructions over.I guess it has an auto dim feature which can be enabled. It it works thru a light sensor on the face of the guage.Pretty cool, have to check that out..

Well, like i said,i am a tard with this stuff.I ran a fused hot wire to the black/white wire. Now,my guage lights only come on wit the running lights?

I read part of another install writeup and it mentions running a hot switched to the passenger fusebox? Is that where i'm going wrong?Where does that tie in to what i've already done?

Btw,did you ever figure the peak recall function(brown wire)?I asked autometer about it and they said it should be run in my car like same as a nitrous switch?Do you understand exactly what that means?

i THINK that is only for cars with the mechanical wot switches. i don't think you can use it for our cars. i could be wrong. per the instructions, it said that if you can't use it, then it should be grounded.

as far as the fused hot wire... yeah, you cannot wire it to the black/white dash light. lol. the passenger side fuse box has several places you can use. it says that you should use an ignition on fuse, but then that would make it so that it would be on whenever you are in the "1" position. i switched it to be in the hot in "start or run" wire.

if you use the open slots, you won't be able to close the fuse cover. so i ended up using a slot that was already in use and used the mini add-a-circuit. i will go downstairs and snap a pic for you. i don't know the number slots off hand.

Ya,thanks.Pics would be great.I think what has me confused is that actually the dimmer switch is for the boost light tie in,and nothing more? The power wire off guage needs fused directly from the fuse box and does not tap any other wires.Do i have that straight now?lol-

here is a pic of my passenger fuse box. one of the fuses runs my boost/vac and fuel pressure gauge. the other is running my a/f meter. it doesn't matter which one you use because they are the same "hot in start or run" type slot.

so one i have tied into slot 14 which is the a/c cycle switch. and the other is slot 18 which is the anti-lock brake system. sorry for the bad pic, but my camera is really bulky and i don't know how to use it very well.

you can use the slot 13, which is an open slot, but then you wont be able to put the cover back on, because the fuse will be sticking too high up. i also, don't recommend using the open slot 5 because 1) it will be a tight fit, and 2) that will give power to the gauge even if you have the key in position 1, such as you just want to listen to the radio...

make sure the original fuses go on the inside of the mini add-a-circuit. i routed the wires to exit the top of the fusebox. that way, i didn't have to dremel anything and the cover will close with no problems.

so anyways, i ran the wires up behind the glove box and onto the other side. i just used those zip ties to fasten them to the other wire looms in the area. i am not good at documenting my work, because i was just making it up as i went along. anyways, i am not the best person to ask, but feel free to pm me with any other questions. i just finished this last week so things are still a bit fresh in my mind.

sorry, didn't see your reply. yes. so the dimmer switch is ONLY to light the gauges. the a/f doesn't use it. that is why i was confused when you said you wanted to know how to light it, because you can't.

so the a/f iirc.... has a red power wire, which goes to the fuse box.. a black ground and brown WOT that both go to a ground source... the rest go to the sensor itself. there are a couple wires that are not used... ie datalogging. pretty easy hook-up actually.
