Water In The Trunk

To install my Tokio Spec D's this weekend I had to remove the trunk outer liner panels to gain access to the upper shock mounts. Quite by accident I noticed that there had recently been standing water collected near the pocket created by the fenderwell along the quarter panel. This was only happening on the driver side. Has anyone else out there had such a discovery? If so, was the cause determined and cured? My concern long term is the potential to create a rust site.

there is a thread around here that goes in to detail about the gaps in the rear wheel wells as well as other areas that we should under coat.

I had the same problem with my 05 S197.
I also noticed that the water in that same area was slightly dirty, and had grit laying at the bottom. This told me that it was being splashed up there by the rear driver's side tire. So I sealed up all of the suspect seams in the wheel well area with duct seal, dried out the pooled water, cleaned out the grit, and sprayed water from a hose into the wheel well. The water was still getting in there. Since all of the seams in the wheel well were fully sealed, I then checked up by the gas tank filler pipe with a flashlight. Up there I found an unsealed seam around the gas filler pipe flange. Sealed it, dried out the pooled water, sprayed into the wheel well, and this time it remained dry. And it has remained dry since it was sealed over a year ago.

Hey thanks. There is a film of dirt in mine as well. I eyeballed the gas filler, but not completely yet. I am hoping its not the rear glass or quarter window. I pan to look at next time I go thru the carwash as well.

Glenn - thanks for the thread reference. Will do a complete inspection. So what is POR-15?

You're welcome.
I doubt if the rear window is the cause. Mine was leaking, and it soaked the trunk matting, but none of the water got into the quarter panel area you're referring to. Some silicone caulking solved the problem.

I noticed there's water somewhere inside my trunk lid or my CDC ducktail... when I open or close it, I can hear water splashing...

I have that same problem. I think its coming from the GT badge in the rear. Somehow it is holding water and it runs out when you open the trunk.

I found some sand, a rock, a bungie-cord and a handful of change once when cleaning the trunk out. I can only assume it all came from inside the trunk, though, 'cause I can't remember having run over any hippies lately...

On a more productive note, I have noticed that the seal can get pinched up around the trunk lid, and when accelerating the water in the trough leaks through like a waterfall...obviously. I noticed this one day while riding in the rain with the back seats folded down. Poking around under the disgustingly cheap trunk carpet...rug...thingies...there's a lot that can leak under the right conditions.

I have not figured out the source yet. The carpet / liner is not getting wet, so its not coming from above. Did some basic inspection of the wheel house but nothing looks obvious. I need to pull the rear tire off so I can get a beter look around that area.

Maybe... I suspect I'm carrying excess weight of water in my ducktail or SHR honeycomb panel...
