like many - i am looking into a CAI as the first real mod. does the tune make more of a difference than the brand of the CAI?

FYI search function just reveals a number of posts all saying how great their combo is - and how the car should have come this way from the factory

From what I have read on these boards. Getting a tuner for the S197s is the best thing you can do hands down.

It just makes more sence to buy the tuner and CAI at the same time as you can normally get them together cheaper and tuned specifically for that CAI.

Just consider the tuner a tool to manipulate your car's computer for the life of the car. Its a must-have if you intend to modify the engine.

You need them both to maximum performance. If I had to pick the one that is the most important... I's say the tune... which will practically eliminate the throttle lag, and give you the most noticeable difference. I really would advise getting both. You will not be satisfied with just either one.

I just read a post from Lee Bender (owner of C&L) about this issue. According to Lee, tunning alone nets you 7-12hp. This is primarily achieved by:
Leaning the factory setting from ~12:1 to 12.9:1 gives you 2-3HP
Increasing the timing 5 degrees = ~7 more hp.

A tuned CAI will typically give you 15-20 more rwhp.

I have told this to many people, but I guess that I have not stated it on any message boards. A tune alone (doesn't matter WHOSE -Diablosport, Hypertech, SCT, Superchips, etc.) will NOT add the kind of numbers that people on the 'net are trying to lead people to believe. I have personally tested tunes from the major manufacturers, and they are good for anywhere between 7-12 HP, depending on the RPM. The breakdown is as follows: Leaning the air/fuel from the stock ratio, which ranges between 12.2:1 to as rich as 11.7:1 (depending on the vehicle) up to the ideal range of 12.9 ish to 13.0:1 is a 2-3 HP gain at BEST. The stock level of timing (at WOT) measured during a pull on a dynojet holds rock steady at 25 degrees. Many of you guys who are familiar with the optimum settings on timing adjusters on the 4.6L 2V engines. After a tune, depending on how agressive the tuner is, it will typically increase the timing anywhere from 4-6 degrees more. This nets another increase of about 7 more HP. Those are the 2 primary adjustments made in a tune on these vehicles.

thanks for the replies so far. i know that i am going to get both (tune/cai) at the same time. for a street application, there really doesnt seem to be a huge difference in the individual CAI's - there does, however, seem to be differences between the individual tuners.

The Roush is actually a re-badged Airaid...I used to have one. They aren't bad but I prefer my C&L Racer

Correct. And just because AirRaid/ROUSH does not require a tune, does not mean you shouldn't get it. The tune will virtually elimiate the throttle lag for you. While the CAI alone will help it breathe better. which initself is a tremendous plus for our stock exhaust. Now add to that a matched axle back, and the comination of all three will make her purr(growl) perfectly.
