Torque Converters
Torque Converters
I was just told by a local performance shop I would have to mod my cams if I added a higher stall TC (3000).
He said and I quote " it would feel like you're towing something until you hit 3000rpm, then it would lock up and go". For the TC to work I would need to modify the cams too.
Does any one know for sure. I live in one of the most restrictive states (CA) there is for smog laws, so I can't modify my cams and be street legal.
I just want more launch when I step on it. It really a Dailey Driver that's only taken out on the weekends. I don't want 4:10's either.

Sounds like he is trying to sell a TC and cam package. I have been running a 3000 rpm stall Precision Industries torque converters for about 5 year now. I am also running Comp NSR cams but I can assure you that you can change the TC with out doing cams. I would suggest you not go higher than 3000 stall on the street. It is a good hit to rear tires when you step on it. You do get a different feel at low speeds but mine cruises at highway speeds normally. There is a misconception by people that the car won't move until you hit the stall of the converter and that is not true. It just won't lock up completely until you hit the stall speed.

Thanks for the response. Lots of good information, still not sure on the cam mod. So I am doing the homework. Just trying to get input from people who actually have this TC installed on a S197 auto mustang.
I guess next I could call AM and see what they say too.
Still need to see if 3K is what I need, maybe around 2500??
