Tires...

Quick question...

The next time I replace my tires, which will most likely be a like a year or two, I am thinking about getting nicer looking tires...so I found this website and I like these tires called Nexen...anyone ever heard of them? I have never heard of them.

http://www.tiredeals4less.com/NEXEN_..._P3415C251.cfm

Those are the ones I was looking at...they seem really cheap as well...anyway, my question is, the stocks I have now are 235/55/17 ...the ones I am looking at are 235/45/17...does that make a difference? Also, why are these so cheap??? Are they crappy tires?

Let me know...I really want to get some sick looking tires for my ride. I like the tread pattern and I want something that gives a wide stance on the rear of the car...

I can't speak for the quality of that particular tire, sorry no experience with it.

Yeah its going to make a difference on your speedometer/odometer. Those are slightly smaller tires in diameter than stock. Here's the deal with tire size: 235/55/17 means the tread width is 235mm, the aspect ratio of the sidwall height to tread width is 55 and the radius of the wheel is 17. So a lower number for aspect ratio means a smaller sidewall or lower profile.

235/55 R17 has a sidewall height of 129.25mm, an overall diameter of 27.17 inches, and for every mile will spin 742.1 times. By contrast, the 235/45 R17 has a sidewall thats only 105.75mm tall, a diameter of 25.3 inches and will revolve 796.3 times every mile. What does that mean to you? It means that when you're traveling 70 mph, your car will tell you its going 75.1mph. Your odometer is going to roll over faster too.

Now since you want a wide stance in back, you can go with wider tires (using smaller aspect ratios to keep circumference the same. At a 45 AR, you'll have to go with a 285 width tire to keep your speedometer's integrity intact. That's going to give you great grip off the line but a little sluggish in the corners and knock down your gas milage a bit. You could safely go with 255/50 R17 if you want to go wider without affecting how responsive your car is (or MPG). Or you could go with staggered sizes front and rear. Like 235 in front and 255 in the rear.

Oh yeah, if you have a tuner, then you can program the new wheel size in (revs/mile) and compensate to make everything correct again. Anyway, I hope this helps.

Great write-up Cavero
I would like to add that I walk by a Mustang with 235mm 45% 17" tires every day. It looks really wrong; way too small. I use the Hankook 255mm 50% 17" (as mentioned above) and at $111 per tire, they are a good value. Plus, they protrude out from the stock rim size about 1", thereby protecting your rim from a brush with an errant curb stone; they give the car a nice classic look too.

discounttire.com has a pretty good info center. Click the link at the bottom of their page then click on tire calculator.

Good stuff, Cavero!
However, one or 2 corrections, if I may. I know....picky, picky, picky. For a 235/55/17 tire, the width of the sidewall at its widest point is 235 mm, and the wheel's diameter is 17".
