Steering Feel...

Ok . . . dropped it off this morning and took one of the tech on a ride with me. Because the vibrations don't get worse as I go from 55-75 and the fact that they road balanced the tires a week ago . . . he suspects a bad tire.
So, they are going to do an alignment and order some tires for me. Lucky me, I get to bring it in again!! :bang:

I noticed something similar to what people are talking about - seemed to be at about 30 through 50 just cruising on surface streets - but what gets me is someone said something about the tires being cold?... I've only notcied it in the morning on the way to work and it is gone by the end of the drive... could temp have something to do with it?....
I think my father in law was teasing me and I wonder how much truth is in it.
But if you think about it. If your car sits for any length of time, oh I don't know 8 ours when you get home. Technically there is a flat spot on the tires from sitting. Probably takes a few 1000 revelutions for it to work itself out.

I think it is a real issue, and I've heard that the flat-spotting of tires varies between tire manufacturer's. If it goes away when the tires get hot, then it very well may be the tires. This will be much more prominent in a car with a stiffer suspension like the GT Mustang. A car with a softer suspension could mask the problem.
No doubt it is real, and may be what some people were experiencing. However, I just got back from 400 miles today in my '05 and I can say with some certainty that it only happens from 73-76 MPH or so, and it feels like it is one of the rear tires. It happened any time I was at those speeds, early in the drive or late. Obviously, after the first 20 miles or so, the tires weren't cold.

I got rid of the Pirellis the first week I owned it and I have never had a problem

Hmmmmmmmm.......................
any tire can do it. I had fancy assed Michelin MXXVs on my M3 - one of the tires slipped a belt which caused a vibration that sounds similar to this.
Now on a seperate note, I've noted a VERY slight vibration in the morning as well. Hmm...

I usually get it first thing in the moring.
Air in the tires is a cold.

Well mine is still doing it. Going to get the dealer to re-shoe my pony and hopefully it goes away. It is pretty bad at 80mph now. I can watch my passenger seat vibrate the whole time. . . I am driving to Vegas on Thur and this BETTER be fixed by then or I will go nuts!!! :bang:
Sometimes a vibration issue like this can be due to a tire defect, or out-of-round tire. If you jack up the car and get the tires spinning, then you can watch the edge of the tire closely to see if it's out of round. While you're at it, also check the edge of the wheel on the outside & inside to see if it is out of round. Or, if you have aftermarket wheels check to make sure the wheel is centered on the hub by watching it as it spins. You can learn a lot just by looking as the wheel is spinning.
I've diagnosed this problem on my car recently and sure enough, both of my front tires are out of round by about 1/8". Unfortunately on my last visit the guys at Discount Tire didn't think it was bad enough to warrant a replacement.
They're Yokohama AVS ES100's. It's frustrating because the less expensive Kumho 712's I had before were perfect in this respect.

Wow - maybe this is an issue with the Pirellis????....
Wonder if anyone who has swapped out the tires for other brand has had this happen.......

Fman, this is what I am dreading. I am still waiting for my new tires to arrive. Hopefully this fixes the problem. . if not, hopefully it isn't anything too serious.
You know its kind of funny that you guys are talking about vibrations. I noticed that I have a slight vibration from 50-55mph. I haven't brought it in yet because I know I will get the "its normal" or "that is just how it is". I have isolated it down to when the car is in 5th gear I feel it. However if I push in the clutch it seems to go away. I am still working on trying to isolate it a little more before bringing it in.
Anyone with this problem who wants it solved should do what I suggested above. Take it on yourself to inspect the wheels & tires that everything is truly round & centered on the hub. If it is, and the tires have been well balanced, and you're still having a vibration problem, then you can blame something else, the rotors, tie rod ends, alignment, etc, etc.
If you do this you could save yourself a lot of time & aggravation.
