Sound deadening to decrease drone
This thread had me laughing this morning....
3 bucks in loose change, a pack of chiclets, and 2 .223 rounds. For those wondering, yeas I ate the gum. Hahahahahahaha. I was wondering what the trunk is used for 'at work' everyday. Are you some kind of mafia hitman or something?
Does anyone know if just putting sound deadening material in the trunk floor is helpful? It seems this is right over the mufflers, and should have the best result? Anyone?

I used both Dynamat Extreme and the Dynamat T.A.C. Mat (Thermalacoustical liner). I did this because while I enjoy the sound of the V8 and the exhaust - the amount of road noise that gets into the cabin is awful - really makes the car sound cheap IMO:
1) Dynamat products are very expensive
2) The Extreme works very well and I did not have to use a heat gun - it rolls on pretty easily with the rubber roller - once you get the hang of it.
3) I applied the TAC mat to the inside of every plastic panel (door, rear quarter, kick, center console, etc) that I could get to. It's easy to cut to shape and apply with a 3M spray adhesive. In total I probably added 50 pounds to my GT, Dynamatting the trunk, doors, rear seat area, floors, front wheel wells - but IMO - well worth the effort and weight penalty in the quieter ride.....Ford didn't use much sound deadening material in these cars (I'm sure the bean counters had something to do with that decision).
Now if I could just find a way to stop that annoying door rattle when you close the door with the windows down - sounds really cheap - anyone find a fix for that yet?
I would have gladley paid an additional $1K for this car for increased sound deadening and upgraded interior materials....

I put down my second coat of the Quietcoat today. Went on a little easier than the first. It would be a fairly easy project if it were in a flat open space, but I pretty much have to crawl into the trunk to get to the hard to reach spaces. Luckily it doesn't adhear well to hair. Borlas are comming in Thur. This stuff better be worth it. So far, comparing the stripped down car to the stripped down car with 2 coats of Quietcoat is quieter and the radio does 'sound' better (an added plus). It does say to allow a full 7 days for the stuff to completely cure before the optimum results are obtained. I'm waiting till the project is complete before I make any final comments. I know the road noise will be lower but I'm skeptical as to it's abiltiy to block out the low frequency droan of the Borlas. We'll see.

I removed all carpet, seats and paneling (except roof) from the back seats to the trunk. For now I'm only doing the interior. Doing all this with 3 coats I used about 3 gal. Oh yeah, I decided to do the back side of the plastic interior panels I took off as well as the underside of the spare tire cover (1coat). I'm trying to wait till I let the stuff cure a little and get the interior back together till I give my final conclusion. I'm hoping the added mass will not make it difficult to get everything back together. Dunno what I would do if that happened.
Don't know how much decibal meters cost, but that would have been an excellent idea (where were you at the start of this post? Radio Shack has decibel meters for about 50 bucks. I just installed Flowmasters on my GT. If you get a meter, post the results you get. I have a decibel meter at work. It would be interesting to compare the results.

That's the first place I'm going after... then again we have different goals, I'm going after road noise and I understand you're going after exhaust drone. I'll prolly do the trunk and back seat. Actually, if you do the back seat to the trunk requires really no carpet removal. Everything else back there is pretty easy. The lower part of the back seat just requires pushing in some pins on each side of the seat. The hardest part is removing those plastic retainers. Much easier to do if you have the special tool. I used another tool that wasnt made for this, but got everything off anyways.

Okay, I got my Borlas in and installed them yesterday. All I can say is OMG this car sounds awesome now. I couldn't be happier with them. Is it possible to have wet dreams while you're awake?
Just to recap, I did 3 coats of the Quietcoat on the metal interior of the car from the back seat to the trunk (except roof and top of trunk). I also coated the plastic panels from the same area and the under side of the cardboard spare tire cover. In addition, I put some flooring insulation (used to put beneath wood floors) in the same spots. Here are my conclusions, given the full cure time is still another 4 days away.
With the stock exhaust I can tell noticeable decrease in exhaust noise and general road noise. I then noticed the engine noise more. With the Borlas, I can't compare before and after unfortunately but I will say this. At idle I can not hear the exhaust. The drone is definitely noticeable inside the cab when hitting the 'drone zone', but I can still carry on a normal conversation. So far I feel it will be fine, though I havent been able to cruise a good steady speed on the freeway without traffic. As of now, the noise I hear I actually like.
So in the end, I am satasfied with doing the Quietcoat. Was worth the money IMO. I would like to do the rest of the car at some point. This stuff will not make the Borlas sound like stock from inside the car, but I feel it has done enough to make it worthwhile. The downside of course is the stuff ain't cheap and it's a PITA to paint on because it is very thick and you are working in tight uncomfortable spaces.
Oh yeah, did I mention Borla rocks?
