Should the driveshaft have play?
Ever since installing my new shifter when I drive the car under heavy throttle I hear what sounds like "clicking". I have gone over every nut and bolt from the install of the shifter and everything is spot on. I did not drop the drive shaft but when I was just under there I noticed I can turn the shaft a little bit in both directions. I swear the sound it makes when I turn it is the sound I am hearing from in the car but alot faster of course. I made a quick video.

Is that to much play?
Thanks.

The play in your DS is normal. You should only hear it when you are in gear and first give it gas or let off the gas. In other words, when the torque on the shaft changes direction. If you hear a constant clicking while you are accelerating, then the noise is not due to the driveshaft play.

I've heard that after putting short throw shifters on these mustangs there is an increase in noise from the driveline. I think I would look for the source of the clicking.
From past experience, here is what I found to be the cause of clicking under hard acceleration.
1975 Firebird - On returning from a SCCA autocross in Key West I started hearing a clicking in 2nd gear on hard acceleration. Turned out to be a cracked cluster gear in the Saginaw 4 speed. Had the cluster gear cracked at the other end by the pilot shaft gear I would have heard it clicking in all gears and not just second.
1988 Bronco - Driving home from work I start hearing a clicking under acceleration and when I would make turns. As I'm pulling up the driveway the Ford TracLoc differential housing splits open and locks up the rear axles. Poorly designed 8.8" LS where Ford machined most of the metal away to allow for the clutch packs.
1996 f-150 SuperCab converted to a 4 door Bronco. Again clicking under hard acceleration and turning. This time I wasn't as lucky as the TracLoc let go 3 miles from home and I ended up pushing a tow truck home. Same exact failure on the TracLoc. I have pics at home so I'll post them later.
I surely hope that Ford has come up with a better carrier design for their LS. If not then it looks like I'll be buying another 31 spline Auburn Pro in the near future.

Here are a few pics of a totaled 8.8 LS, rusty due to them sitting around outside for a few weeks while I researched digital cameras.

Bob, thanks for the info. The 75' Firebird scenerio is similar to what a Steeda rep who drove the car told me. More then likely it was there before but can be heard more now because of the increased noise transfer through the new shifter.
