Running 93 octane in car before flashing tune?

Hey guys so I just received my 93 bama tune, and I'm wondering how long do I have to run 93 octane gas through my car? I'm at ~50 miles to empty now. I just spoke with AM and the guy told me a tank and a half. I didn't know I had to do that long. Obviously I'm not travelling so that would take me like 1.5-2 weeks till I could flash this tune to get through a tank and a half. Is this right or can I go shorter? I figured since I'm basically empty, it shouldn't take that long for 93 octane to be circulated through the engine. I could be completely wrong though. thanks

Run it till 10 miles to empty, then fill up with 93, that car has knock sensors so it won't hurt anything

Yea dude just run it down till there's just a couple gallons left and then fill up with 93. Drive it around for a day and you'll be good. You just need the 93 to be in the lines

Well I flashed it already. I drove it around for a little before flashing so hopefully it doesn't hurt anything...

So far, so good. Definitely more responsive and sensitive. I feel a main difference coming from my 87P, is more torque and power in the higher rpm's. Though when I get in 4-6000 rpm, I hear a slight "rattle" like noise like below my driver seat. Not sure what it could be.

Tu3218,

I'm glad to hear you got the correct information from My Bama team and our fellow members! In most cases getting down to about a quarter tank then filling it up with 93 will be fine. You may hear some pinging because of the octane level, the more 93 you get through the lines, the better off you'll be! (after you run through this tank and re fuel again everything will be perfect.)

Let me know if you have any questions!

- Dan

awesome! That's exactly the noise I was hearing, the pinging. That definitely takes my worry away. thanks for that.

Yea dude, sounds like spark knock. It's no big deal. Just some of the 87 that's mixed in. Most people think that higher octane means higher combustion, it's actually the opposite.

Yeah, I can feel the more I drive(yeah I've been wasting a lot of gas today with this tune haha), the noise is going away and this tune is killer. I need my cai intake now for sure!

But yeah, I was researching the different octanes and basically the higher the octane, the harder it is to burn. So 87 burns a lot quicker then 93 octane. That's what I found at least. How that transitions into better performance, I'm not sure.

Yea I'm not sure how the interaction with timing works but I know that compression and octane have a positive relationship. That's why you're getting spark knock, also known as pre detonation, with the more aggressive tune (advanced timing) and lower octane.

Oh gotcha. Well now that I'm running this 93 tune, say I'm out and I need gas really bad. Can I still put in 92 or even 91? Or do I have to strictly put 93 in and plan around that?

Higher octane gasoline resists ignition. You can run higher compression since it will resist compression ignition (due to the temp rise created by greater compression.)

It also allows you more latitude in timing adjustment.

93 or higher. Lower octane will cause pre detonation and spark knock. It probably won't destroy anything, but why risk it? There are a lot of ppl that will run lower octane to save money (ie. my dad runs 87 in his Crossfire which calls for 93) or just don't care.

Thanks Paris, that makes sense.

But yeah I was just saying if it was an emergency an needed gas immediately. But yeah, maybe it was a fluke but I seem to be getting better gas mileage with this 93 tune an no cai. I did a solid average of 75 on the highway an got 30 mpg. I'll take it with the performance
