ring gear and pinion whine

ford gears are not made by richmond and if you do a search you will find out they tend to have a whine problem more than other gears.i tried two sets and both whined bad ,put in ford gears and had no problem.

How do you crash a bearing?? Never heard this one.

i have significant whine from my FRPP 4.30s. i think the rod end LCA have something to so with that

:

i also have violent vibration when i let off at 80+mph and dont know what it is but it sounds bad

I tend to agree poor installs cause alot of the problems. According to Ford instruction sheet;"The ring gear backface should be checked for flatness. Generally after heat treating there may be a degree of taper. This may be rectified by lapping gear back on sandpaper on a glass flat plate. This will give a more even and uniform pattern when setting up your new gear set." "Examine the ring gear mounting surface for nicks and burrs which might prevent a flush mounting of the newly installed ring gear. Ring/pinion tooth depth variations can result from a ring gear that is 'cocked' on it's mounting surface."

"Each Ford Racing ring gear and pinion is prerun and marked on the pinion face with it's proper depth setting called the 'checking distance'. This dimension is from the face of the pinion to the axle center-line. A setting tool must be used to measure the checking distance. Pinion depth is adjusted by adding or subtracting shim thickness. Stay +/-.002" of the pinion dimension."

Poor install, setting the pinion depth 'checking distance' should be the cause of most gear whines in my opinion.

Pinion bearing preload: 15 in./lbs rotating torque for used bearings and 25 in./lbs. with new bearings.

Backlash should be .008" to .012" for street gear sets. Also be sure carrier bearings are preloaded.

Installation of ring and pinion gears is not for a novice. Always go with a good reputable shop who has an experienced mechanic. Unless of course, you yourself are pretty good at this and have done it in the past.

Here are some instructions I found for those who are curious. Although not complicated, it involves checking small clearances and making the appropriate adjustments.
