Replacing Stock Brakes

I burned up a set of rotors and pads at the track last week. (Check out my site under Mustang In Motion for video). I ordered a set of R1sport cross-drilled, slotted and vented rotors from Ebay earlier this week. I am thinking of using the Hawk HPS brake pads. Anyone have any input as to what is a good combination for street only use. I will not be taking my car to the track anymore as that is too darn expensive!

My car survived a track day with the Hawk Pads and stock rotors. Eventually I plan on getting a big break kit though. As for rotors, there are lots out there, just need to find ones that fit your budget.

The concensus from everyone I have talked to is Hawk pads are the way to go. I will most likely stick with the HPS as I am not going to race the car at the track anymore. I am counting my blessings that nothing bad happened and I have a nice video for my website.

Just ran Sebring. Ran more than 120 miles on the track using stock rotors, Hawk HP+ pads and Motul fluid. I swap out my pads for track weekends. My rotors survived but I will be changing out to Brembo rotors for the next event. I don't run my HP+ pads on the street because they squeek and get the wheels really dirty. I think the stock pads give excellent street duty. I also use Kumho or Toyo R compound tires as the grip is amazing.

the hawks work great street or track and the stock rotors are fine after you take the backing plates off.

a word of caution concerning the motul fluid. according to randy at ford motorsports it will eat the seals in the abs unit. i use the valvoline synpower and at $6 per quart its inexpensive enough to change the fluid before every track day. ( i go every other wednesday ).

Hey thanks for the info on the Motul. I will have to check that out. I have been using Motul Fluid for more than ten years and have never had a problem on any of my ABS vehicles. I have also recommended it (as I have here to many of my friends who "track" from Mustangs to Mini's to Ducati motorcycles) and have had no negative feedback of failures in their braking systems. If you have any further info-it would be greatly appreciated.

IMO the stock brakes suck but im really rough on them. The dealer has already resurfaced them and replaced the front left rotor due to warping. Id really love to go to steeda but dont have 2Gs to spend.

Anyone tried any of the stoptech stuff?

Brenspeed is recommending Motul for their upgrade kit.

Both of those kits look like a waste of money to me. You're basically getting better pads and that's it. Stainless lines may offer a slightly different pedal feel, maybe, but they offer no performance advantage. Ford Heavy Duty fluid is used by numerous racers for a fraction of the cost of Motul. And drilling/slotting stock-size rotors? That accomplishes nothing. You get much more bang for the buck upgrading the fronts with larger rotors and leaving the rears alone since the fronts do most of the stopping.

Agreed, but for aesthetics, not autocrossing, it's O.K. to me. I don't have a need to spend $2k for big brakes to run the 1/4 mile. Not any different than getting the Shaker for $800 which adds zero hp but looks really really cool...
