Real-world MPG difference V6 vs. GT
#22
Over a year of ownership with my GT, best I can do with regular driving is 13 city, 21 hwy.
The city driving could be greatly improved if speed limits in my area were lower and there was not so many stop lights/signs.
The hwy driving will not get any better unless you can set cruise control for around 45-65.
My previous car was also a Civic and got 40 mpg all the time on the freeway, but I bought it for that reason. I did not but the Mustang for practicality and knew I'd get miserable fuel economy, but am actually supprised it does so well for a V-8.
If less than 15mpg would be unbarable to you, perhaps it's best to keep the Civic.

I'm getting 23 mpg + with my stock GT. This is from a combination of highway and city driving. I do not tread lightly on the gas...sometimes hit it. Brand of gas does make a difference, though. Citgo seems to work best, BP, Marathon and Sunoco are OK. Shell doesn't work very well at all. Car is an '05 with 16,000 miles.

94tbird, my mpg numbers are real close to yours, except I have the auto. I did hit around 27 mpg early last year on a road trip. Cruise control was set 75 - 80 on I95. My last trip a few weeks ago to the same place I averaged around 26 mpg, not really using cruise control.
I don't use the car as a daily driver, but around town I do not even check the mpg, because my foot is way to heavy on the gas listening to those Flowmasters sing. Not saying I am speeding around town, but I get up to speed faster than I would in truck.

Now, the V6 blends the decent gas mileage of the TSX and the fun factor of the Mustang nicely, but I much prefer the more aggressive styling of the GT (not to mention the extra power). I've thought about modifying the appearance of the V6 with GT bumpers and rockers, and even with that it would still cost about $2000 less than the GT, get better mpg, and less insurance (not much, about $150 a year). But, again, with two kids, a career, house, etc., there's something to be said to just buying the car you want and saving the time you'd spend on mods for other things.
So, I'm torn. And the MPG for the GT is a big factor. Anyone else care to share their numbers?

I get about 330 miles per tank, driving it like a beast every day. 40% city, 60% highway. I hit 100 just about every day, couldn't be happier with the gas comsumption for a V8. My 89 LX 5.0 did a little better due to lower rpms at 80mph, but if I baby it (nothing higher than 2,500rpms), I get about 350 miles out of a tank.

I have about 7000 miles on her so far. My over all average is about 19mpg. My best was 25mpg and worst was 17mpg on a tank.
I'm about 80% city, 20% hwy.
05GT, stock, manual tranny.

If you think a couple MPGs will make much of a difference over a year on your piggy bank...I laugh at you ;-)
If you're worried about gas mileage DON'T BUY A SPORTS CAR
Don't mean to sound nasty, but it gets to me when people worry about that stuff when buying a sports car.

On my last highway trip on Wednesday the computer was reading 29.9 mpg. When I pushed the reset button the numbers read 33.4 then settle back down to 29.7mpg. My V6 as 18900 miles on it. If you read any of the archived files on this subject the more you drive the mustang the better the gas mileage.

It's always amusing to me when people speak in absolutes like these. Let me ask you something - if Ford was just interested in marketing the Mustang as a sports car only, why didn't they just make it 350 hp, 15 mpg with no back seat? The answer - because they wanted to keep it just practical enough to appeal to middle-aged people with kids like me. As such, when you appeal to that segment, a few hundred dollars a year is most definitely a factor. It's called balance - balancing your family's budget with your need for a little fun. Ford understands this. I'm sorry you don't. If the point of my original post "gets you" maybe next time just skip it and reply to a post where you actually have something constructive to contribute.

I have a V6 Manual and exclusively burn premium fuel, as that enables me to keep the engine RPM a little lower without a pre-knock grumble. I have recorded my consumption and here is what I have so far:
4,080 miles consuming 192.793 gallons = 21.2 MPG Overall
Highest single tank full mileage = 27.8 MPG
Lowest single tank full mileage = 18.3 MPG
My typical drive is about 16 miles, which includes:
Cold-start & 25-30 MPH for 4 miles
Freeway 60-65 MPH for 8 miles
20-40 MPH for 4 miles.
I keep my tires at 40 PSIG & I use Castrol Syntec 5W-50. I have no modifications which would radically affect my mileage.

I don't know how you guys in the GT's are getting such good MPG. I'm currently at 14.4 and my average speed is around 25 so I do mainly city driving. I'm looking forward to my first full tank on the highway to see how good it can get.

I know the estimated MPG are only about 2 mpg difference, but what are the real world results? I've put a deposit down on a GT, but coming from a Honda Civic getting 31 mpg, I don't think I could bear 15 mpg. If I can realistically get 20-22 with the Gt, I'll stay with it. I'm about 80% highway. How would the V6 compare? I've read ranges of 18 to 27 in the V6.
How bout everyone here? What's your car (V6 or GT), real world MPG, and driving mix (% highway/city)?

if you go through a tank of gas a week, it will only cost you about $220 extra per YEAR in gas money if you go for the GT. That's considering the GT gets 3 less mpg than the V6. If you can't afford the extra little bit go recycle some cans a few times a year and bingo was his name o.

One quick general comment on fuel economy. There are five sources of drag on a vehicle, and they are:
1.) Gravity (going up hill)
2.) Wind resistance
3.) Rolling resistance (tire resistance)
4.) Pumping horsepower (the energy it takes to compress your air/fuel charge). This goes up linearly with displacement of the engine.
5.) Mechanical losses (friction in the motor, accessories, transmission, differential, bearings, etc.)
The single easiest thing you can do to improve your mileage is to keep at least 40 PSIG in your tires. Remember, no air ever leaked INTO a tire, and as long as you don't exceed the maximum pressure listed on the tire's sidewall, the tire won't be hurt.

worste mpg was 19.5 (a whole lot of track runs and city) best mpg was 31.8 on a road trip. My normal everyday driving is in the 24-26mpg range. Im pretty impressed with the tank im on so far, 128miles so far and just above the 3/4 tank mark.

I've had my car for over a year and have almost 30,000 miles on it.
On long trips I get about 25 mpg, daily driving (70% hwy) I'll get 20-22 mpg. The worst I've ever gotten was 16 and I had a LOT of fun on that tank of gas
My driving habit is to nail it on an entrance ramp, brake, merge and set my cruise @ 72. Around town I take it easy so I don't get pulled over...that's not to say I drive like my grandma though.
'05 auto, bassani mufflers, bone stock otherwise, 87 octane.
