Question About Open Headers

I want to open up my headers for some fun, I plan to put everything back on, but I have some questions first.

Will it hurt anything? I understand I'll probably lose some low end power but I'm more concerned about damaging anything? Like the motor or maybe the hot air down there with no where to go when stopped?

What should I take off? Just the cats, cats and mid-pipe, or everything? What's easiest? If I do that, are they gaskets on the pipes at all that I'd need to replace or is it just bolt on?

Last one. My car is lowered, I haven't tried it yet, but will it go up ramps? I hate jacking it up with that jack in the trunk. Lowered with Steeda Springs.

I think that's all I have for now. Thanks!

Extremely Big Waste of time.Sounds Like dog POO.Low compression and a small cubic engine means no good open header sound.Your average exhaust falling off junkbox sounds the same.

You'll have a tough time going up ramps with the car lowered.

Get a set of ramps designed for lowered cars, or if you want to jack the car up, drive up onto a few pieces of plywood under each wheel so you can squeeze a good jack underneath.

I agree about the open headers. You could just pull the axlebacks off for fun as well.

Well, sorry for trying to have some fun with my car. Constructive things for this car generally cost money, and I'm just want to hear what it sounded like.

Mikem, I don't know why you have to post on my thread about it being a waste of time. I have time to waste and I'm going to use it on my car. All I wanted to was to have some questions answered. Thanks.

As for being too low, I made me some ramp extensions to allow me to use my current ramps.

Sorry. But if you are talking about doing this with the stock Manifolds you probably will get an engine light due to the oxygen sensors not seeing anything.

Okay, a check engine light is fine. But that still doesn't answer my questions.. Beyond the ramp one now.

I drove mine about 15 miles with JBA longtubes bolted on and nothing connected to them. It sounded terrible and i didnt notice any perfomance difference either way although i wasnt trying since i was mostly in tight traffic with a very loud car.

Don made a video of his car with open headers. I think it sounded pretty sweet. Link to clip, it's 80mb so be patient while downloading

If you really wanted to you could even take the stock H pipe off with your car on just jackstands. You can also go to any shop that has a well and they could take it off from there instead of using a ramp.

are we talking open long tubes, or open stock manifolds...... I would be a little hesitant to start it open stock manifolds with out some sort of down pipe..... it ends pretty freakin close up there..... too much soft stuff to burn, id want it closer to the ground.

Ummm, I loved it when I was driving around with open long tube headers. I thought it sounded pretty good and so did many others but whatever if some dont.

I agree that open long tubes sounded freakin awesome (thanks for the link Stu), especially the 1-3/4" version I have. But, I did feel a slight loss of low end torque (N/A at the time). I loved that hellacious sound, but it's not something you'd want to do full time. My solution is to install electric cutouts so I can get that sound with the flick of a switch. I can't wait for some ricer to pull up next to me at a light and rev his fart can.

I have no idea what open stock manifolds would sound like, but my guess is that they wouldn't sound near as good as the LTs. And then there is the O2 sensor issue.
