Pypes Violators 304 vs. 409 Stainless steel...is the extra cost worth it?
Looking at a set of Pypes Violators, and the price of the 409 set at $189 is pretty attractive. But what is the potential downside of going with the 409 vs. the 304? Is it more prone to rusting? If so, can this be controlled somehow?

Just to be on the safe side I would go with the 409, especially if you live near the ocean... If you go w/ 304 it won't more than likely rust but if you can afford the 409 I would do it...

T304SS is actually more corrosion resistant than T409SS, but T409SS is less expensive and a stronger alloy due to more iron and titanium content.

You need to look up the difference between the 2 types. I agree with everything you say but you need to swap the 304 and 409 part. 304 will NOT rust. 409 is magnetic, cheaper and will rust in time. 409 is magnetic because it has iron in it . So in short REBEL spend the few extra bucks and go with the 304 SS muffs.

Q: What is the benefit of the 304 Steel vs. the 409 on the Pypes Violator
mufflers? Is it mostly looks or is the 304 more rust resistant? thank you
A: Either one will resist rust but you will get more of the minor surface rust
with the 409. basically just for cosmetics.

Well I have to agree with their statement. 409 SS is what most factory exhausts are made from today. 409 SS will resist rust many time better than the old aluminized steel exhaust that rusted out in 2-3 years. 409 will last about 7 years as a daily driver here in Ohio. 304 SS will last many time longer. Borla's are made from 304 SS and that is why they give a million mile warranty on their mufflers.

If you plan on keeping your ride for more than 5 years, I would definitely invest the extra $$$ for the 304 grade SS !

409SS is stronger than 304SS due to more iron content and titanium content. OEMs pick 409SS because of its durability and lower cost. Rust can be sanded away on 409SS and repainted as long as you don't need to see something shiny. 7-10 years sounds about right for the rust belt.
