Thumbs up

I took my car in to the dealer today to have them look at the engine and see if they could find a reason as to why it dies in 4th gear at high speeds (see: http://forums.bradbarnett.net/index.php?showtopic=38588). I was also experiencing pinging with my C&L and Predator 93 octane tune (as the title states) so I got up early today and put the stock airbox and stock tune back in the car to have the dealer look at that problem as well. To my surprise, when I got out on the road and jumped on it, the pinging was gone.

So, my question is, short of paying for a dyno session, why parameters can I changes on my 93 octane tune to try and eliminate the pinging?

Chris,
You can use your Predator to pull a couple of degrees out of your timng.
This will cause the loss of a few ponies but should stop the pinging. What type of gas are you running. (Brand) I have had no issues with mine running Shell. I also am running a C&L with 93 tune.

I either have BP or Exxon in the tank. I'll have to pay more attention to what gas I have in the tank when the pinging is a bit more noticeable.

I pulled out 2 degrees over all to get rid of my pinging but I use california gas with my 93 tune. No more pinging now.

Chris,
I'd try a tank of Shell or Sunoco 94 your next fill up before I messed with the timing. Just take it a little easy with the right foot until you figure it out.

I normally use Sunoco or Mobil 93 octane with the Predator 93 tune and a C&L CAI without any problems.
However, a little while back I noticed some WOT pinging after filling up with Mobil 93, and strangely I had previously used gas from the same station with no pinging. So I kept my foot out of the loud pedal until I refilled with Sunoco, and the pinging went away with the ambient temperature just as hot as with the Mobil. Attribute it to a load of bad gas. Perhaps some lower octane gas was being sold as 93 due to the refinery problems in the Gulf states after the hurricanes.

use a bottle of octane boost with every fill up on the 93 octane tune. Just to make sure. I bought a case of 20 for less than $2.00 at O’Reilly’s

I had the same problem with the C&L 93 tune above 4k rpms. I backed off the timing from 4k-7k by 2% and it seemed to fix the problem.

It's funny that someone mentioned refinery problems and fuel quality after Katrina, becuase I didn't notice the problem until after the hurricane. Could be coincidence.

I found a Shell station around here, filled up with their v-power, and backed the 4k-7k timing down by 2% and the pinging is gone. Today, I'm going to bump the timing back to normal and see if the pinging returns.
