pinging with 93 race tune
I'm getting some pinging with a 93 race tune from Tillmanspeed. It was pretty bad when I was using ExxonMobil gas, but now it's 99% eliminated with Chevron gas. Now it only pings very rarely at WOT in certain conditions.
APDPerformance is out for some car show so I can't get ahold of them until next week. What is the generic solution to avoid pinging?
I have an SCT2 and I'm a noob. The general impression I get is that I have to "retard timing." How much should I retard it by? Is there anything else I should change?
Also... does anyone know if Tillmanspeed's 93 race tune disables the TCS? The light is off, but I would like to confirm that the TCS is still enabled and that pressing the button actually does something more than turn the light on. Maybe it's all the amazing torque I'm not used to, but it's really, really easy to lose traction.

Either pull some timing or add some fuel. I recently changed from a Predator to the SCT2 when I got my supercharger and I'm not very familiar with the SCT yet , so I can't give you any other advise ...
You can take out a few degrees of timing on the X-Cal by taking the spark to the -x values. Try -2 degrees across all rpm bands.
I believe the TCS is still on unless you turn it off. It can be disabled in the tune, but when that happens, the light shows up all the time on the button and the squiggly lines icon in the tach lights up. If those are both off, the TCS system is acting normally, and can still be deactivated when you push the button.

Thanks for the help guys.
I never messed with the details in the Xcal, but from what you say it sounds like you can specify timing in various RPM bands. So if I get pinging in a certain RPM range, should I just pull timing in that one range?
Also, what is this about adding fuel instead of pulling timing? Is that an alternate method of avoiding detonation that doesn't reduce power? Can you elaborate?
Thanks!

CR went to the SEMA show this week. I'd stay with the Chevron gas this week and keep my foot out of it and talk to CR when he gets back. Unless you told him to turn off the TCS he doesn't turn it off. If he did you would see the lite with the skidding car all the time. CR did my tune and works great.
I'd stay away for Exon gas. Years ago when I used to haul gas Exon hardley has any true gas in there fuel with all the additives.

You can pull timing from just that rpm band that is giving you pinging. Is it pinging at full throttle only, or at more modest throttle as well? If full throttle only, increasing the fuel % at WOT may help, but that will not help at all when at less than WOT. Pulling 2 degrees timing will not significantly affect power. You might lose a few ponies, but I doubt you will feel a difference. That is the safest way to reduce the detonation (pinging), as adding fuel is sort of like a band aid...the wound is still there, it is just covered up. The actual problem is too much timing for the octane rating of the fuel, and the only true cure is less timing, or more octane.
just keep it simple and if you stick with chevron gas you will only need to pull GLOBAL timing back 1 degree, if you still get a little pinging pull it back 1 more, but I doubt you will need to.
That should tell you something about Chevron gas
thats all I put in my car if I have a choice in the matter

Cool, will retard timing by a degree then. Thanks for the help everyone.
If you had been using the tune for a while without any problems and the pinging started just recently, then there may be some carbon build up in the engine. I recently had a WOT pinging problem with a 93 octane tune, dumped a can of Seafoam in the tank, the pinging disappeared after 200 miles, and has not returned. Great stuff!
