oil presure went bye bye

Lost oil pressure the other day. Put a manual guage on it and the results are. 10 psi cold at idle, 5 hot at idle, 40 psi cruising at 40 mph. Good thing I have a brand new shortblock from my 2001 mineral grey convertible that I never installed(hence my screen name). Block is new frpp windsor, new ford cobra crank, manley hbeams, manley 18cc pistons. I just had the pistons flycut for the three valve. Got to get it together for mustang week. I have to modify the block for the 06 timing cover. And I will lose the knock sensors. I was running 13psi on the stock motor with only 3700 miles. Was beating on the car kinda hard though. The motor still runs it just rattles a little and throws cam phaser codes. Any other suggestions on things I didnt think of for the new motor. Kinda sucks, but I should be able to turn it up now. thanks guys.

hmmm seems like more and more FI 3Vs are starting to fail. im begining to think this motor isnt for boosting in its stock form.

Someone else was mentioning something in another post that makes a lot of sense. The 3V engines already have a higher compression ratio than the older 4.6L's out there. Combine that with some boost, and you get some massive cylinder pressures. Would that make the 3V 4.6's less able to withstand boost?? I don't know but it sure sounds feasable?

Also in the meantime if you need to keep it running, you could try switching to a heavier oil, such as a 10-40 or even a 20-50. That should give you oil pressure since the low pressure must be a result of bottom end damage. That damage has likely worn so much on the bearings that there is massive clearance letting the oil flow through to easily. Thickening up the oil will keep it from flowing as easily and keep pressure up.

10w40 or 20w50 will screw up the variable cam timing setup. That system is heavily dependant on oil viscosity to work properly. Basically the motor has to come out, new bearings, ect. and yes 13 PSI is way to much on the stock internals. The compression ratio is too high for that much boost and it's really going to strain the pistions, rods and bearings.
Time to put in that new engine.

I wouldn't necessarily consider your engine to be "blown" by the sounds of it. Dig into it alittle and see what you find; usually when one of these new engines blows because of running a blower, there is a nice, big hole in the block.

Hmmmm... that's all I've been using for the past 11,000 miles (and 400+ runs at the track), and I've never expereinced any issues with the VCT whatsoever.
