Oil change how often by dealer?
#21
The O5 engine comes from the factory with Semi-Synthetic 5-20. That's what I'll be useing Motorcraft Semi 5-20.
I baby the Mustangs with a once a year oil change at the beganing of the season. That is because they are usually driven less than a thousand miles. The Cobra only has 650 and its almost storage time.
As for my dailys, the Envoy's I-6 (7 quarts) can go over 12,000 before an oil change is required under warranty. I change it around 6,000, the oil is not as bad as my 98 Jimmy is at 3,000 and I change that at 4,500.
If the Mustang is a toy play with it, if its a daily the recommendations of 5,000 are fine.
If you are going to use Full Syn in a daily, no sense to change at 3,000 when its made to last till 10,000 with ease.

I'm following the recommended interval of 5000 miles. But I was wondering: at the dealer, do you have a choice of motor oil, or are you stuck with what they have (Motorcraft)? Because if I have a choice, I'd insist on having the dealer use either Castrol Syntec or Motul 8100 Eco-nergy 5W-30.

I do mine at 5 and only at the Ford dealer because
A)its $10 cheaper than Texaco
B)they know what they're doing.
C)I get to play with the lot ponies while I wait.

I would go by either time or mileage. I change my oil in June and December (before I put it away).... I use the FULL synthetic (Royal Purple) so therefore I don't go to the dealer for oil changes. My service manager actually thinks FS is a waste of money but the biggest thing it does is that it keeps a nice coating on the parts that regular oil doesn't do (especially for long term storage as many of us are getting ready for). I don't put that many miles on the stang so if I only did it every 3 thousand miles it would be lucky to be every other year. Time and wear are the determining factors for oil/fluid changes. Remember if you start it up in the winter, let it run at least 10 minutes. You need to let the moisture that will be in the oil to burn out before you stop the engine.

In Canada the recommendation is every 3000 miles or 5000 km. I took the mustang to the dealer for the first oil change because it was free. Ford likes to tell its customers that they have the best oil product around. False. I prefer Quaker State Q (horse on label), it is a high rpm synthetic oil. Royal Purple is another recommended product. Another problem with going to the dealer is waiting an hour for an oil change.
You can have your engine oil changed any where as long as the oil meets the specifications in the owner's manual. Remember there is a service log book that comes with your owner's manual. All you have to do is have the service tech that changes the oil date and sign the book
at the time of the oil change.
