Which Oil?
#41
I use Redline Oil in my cars. I personally wouldn't touch Mobil 1 with a 10 foot pole these days due to a number of directly related issues with it. Including, but not limited to:
-half the idle oil pressure @ 270 degrees of Castrol GTX (not even synthetic), and what's worse is the M1 was 15/50, the Castrol was 10/30
-Oil burn off issues in numerous cars. A friend's truck used a quart every 1k miles towing, but never "burned" it or leaked it. When we changed brands the oil use stopped. And if you look you'll often find a burnt on vapor on the dipsticks, that's vapor from the oil burning off.
-Every LS1, LS6 and LT1 we've had bearing issues with was on M1, never a problem with other oils even "inferior" ones. Those engines (and yes, I'm talking GM engines here) have oiling issues @ high level of cornering force which can starve bearings which means you better have a good strong oil film to protect the bearings.
-Various oil samples have shown M1 to have broken down additives much more quickly than Redline or Valvoline Synthetic. All samples from the same car. M1 was recommended for change @ 3k miles based on additives being toast, the others were 'recommended' for extended use based on the package in the oil. I still prefer to change it sooner than later to get rid of water and soot that accumulates in the oil... but it was pretty telling.
Oil choice is largely personal. But I've had case after case of issues in/on vehicles on M1 that went away with a change to something else. Now, lots of folks use it and have no trouble at all. But it's not worth the risk to my engine, especially when the cost today isn't that huge. And in fact while Redline is IMHO the best, I also feel Valvoline Synthetic is much superior to M1 as well (and they claim they have 4x better wear resistance than M1, which I believe based on my findings having run all 3 (and others). I'm not saying you all need to run Redline, and only Redline. I'm saying I think there are better options, regardless of what you pick, than M1. All in my humble opinion based on actual things that I or customers have experienced.
Not to start a war, this is simply my opinion and not much reason to discuss because it's like talking religion...
