nitrous on a budget

I have an 06 GT and am in need for more power. I cant afford a supercharger so i was thinking nitrous. I can get the Zex kit for about $550 and I want to know what else I need to buy to have it done correctly. I know I need a tune, and I have the SCT Xcal 2. So do I just need to take it to a tuner shop and have them do it? How much will that cost me? And is there anything else I need?

you don't necesarily have to spend the money on a tune. run 91/93 octane (depending on where you are at) on a stock tune and you should be fine with a modest blast.

your best investments will be a window switch and a bottle heater. don't be like the f'n morons on Pinks heating your bottle at the track with a torch.

I hope you have sticky tires and aftermarket lca's as well

I hope you're joking, the only modest blast he's going to get with that is the sound of a piston popping through his hood.

I'm sure he would be fine with a 75 shot... for a while. I personally wouldn't chance it. I know the original poster wanted cheap, but seriously. Spend some extra money to do it right. Remote opener, purge kit, bottle heater and a TUNE. I'm not made of money myself, but I know when not to skimp on a $100 tune.

1. Don't need a remote opener.
2. You can purge it through the motor.

What is a NEED: Bottle heater, pressure gauge, window switch, Fuel pressure safety switch.

What exactly is a window switch?

It is a mechanism that only allows your nitrous to flow within a set RPM window. You don't want the system active too low in the rpm band (rpm backfire) or too high either.

EDIT: I mean Nitrous Backfire. I shouldn't post late at night.

You definitely need a tune before spraying anything.

sorry, don't know much about zex. I've only done one Holley setup about two years ago. Call them or go on their webpage. http://www.zex.com

The best nitrous kits on the market right now, in our personal use and installation experience are made by Compucar. Give them a shout, they make REALLY nice stuff. If you need a price, let me know.

I said MODEST - meaning 100 at the most. with a stock tune and good fuel that isn't pushing it.

You can use a 75 shot with the stock tune and 93 octane. You want the racer's kit which includes a bottle heater, purge, pressure gauge and blowdown tube for around $300. Zex sells a window switch now for like $150, i think. That would be good idea also.

Any more than a 75 shot and you need a good dyno tune and colder spark plugs.

I don't want to appear to be a smart tass but if you are making payments and cannot afford to replace a blown motor the best advise is leave it alone.

digging up an old thread... aftermarket tunes advance the timing to get the most power, when you add nitrous you have to retard the timing, so your pretty much at stock again. so less then a 100 shot shouldnt need a tune. after 100 reduce timing.

What part of the country are you from? I ask cause I have a 10 lbs bottle with preasure gauge on it (full), 16ft braided hose, bottle warmer, 100 hp & 150 hp jets, 2 1ft braided hosed, wet nossle, blowdown tube and switches. All you will need is an rpm window switch, remote bottle opener (if desired), fuel block to tap into the fuel system, and a dash mounted preasure gauge.
