I've been thinking for a long time about doing side exhaust on my car to get the look of a '65 Shelby. I don't like any of the aftermarket side skirts, so I thought about just doing it myself. (with a LOT of help from a friend)

Since I don't have any mufflers (SLP LM's) the only problems I can see are clearance issues. i.e. Clearance to the ground, the "frame" and the rocker mouldings.

What do you guys think? Can it be done w/o tearing things up too much? Negative feedback is appreciated since this sounds like another dumb idea for a mod to my car.

There is not much room in that area under there, so if you do something it will show (hang down)without the skirts. It will be very loud also. I love to experiment myself. Sometimes its throwing away money though. If you can weld and get some cheap pipe just to see how it sounds and looks go for it.

Here's pictures of my side exhaust, under the car. This is a custom side exhaust, not an after market. This was done by Lords Custom Performance in Bufford,Ga. before any after market was available! I hope this might be able to help you. Only one picture will post.

I have FFRP side exhaust on my Cobra only because it was on the car when I purchased it 6 years ago and lot of people thought it was kool. I find it a pain to maintain the side skirts because they are always plagued with stone chips and I'm basicily stuck with the Borals, although they are OK. I can only do a custome change.

As for our GT, it will always stay rear exhaust. Plus the stock rear fascia would look stupid with out pipes.

I would move on to a different mod, for now anyway.

James, don't worry about the other pics. I have several of your pics on my computer.

For the rear valance, I would get one from a V6 and fill in the one "hole".

As for the sound, like I said, I already have SLP LM's and from inside the car they are quieter than the Magnapaks I had on my '03.

Cost for just the exhaust would be pretty cheap since I'd have a friend do it. He loves experimenting and he can do exhaust work. The rear valance would be the most expensive. I think the hardest part would be shortening the rocker moulding or cutting a hole in it while still keeping it looking factory. The one thing I wouldn't trust would be having to cut a little out of the seam that's behind the moulding. How much structural support does that provide?

Thanks, guys. I needed that. But hey, it's nice to dream.

You could always make the exhaust and buy BBR's rear bumper. They sell it seperately unline the lip from Cervini's. Personally, I LOVE my side exhaust and will never go back!

I'm the same way about my exhaust! LOVE IT and would'nt change a thang, except unless I could get the same sound that is on the car that Blow-by Racing did for one of their customer's car! I heard it at FFW @ Commerce in april. One of the meanest sounding exhaust I've ever heard.

Your car looks great, Stu! (you're not helping in the 'talk me out of it' department, though. )
