My car's CEL is on

Does anyone know of a good affordable OBD II code reader?

I have no clue what's wrong.

Can't answer your question directly, but if you want to save the expense many auto parts stores in my area will hook up a scan tool and give you the results for no charge.

I saw a display at Advance Auto that had ODBII readers for about $50. Good luck.

My car is still under warranty so I guess I could take it to the dealer have them pull the code - for free I might add.

My car has been modded a little so I'm not sure how they would take that.

Anyhow, it just came on one day. I reflashed it with my SCT XCalibrator I but the **** CEL still comes on after a while.

Can't you read the code w/ your X-cal? I know if it's an X-cal 2 you can.

I got an X-Cal 1.

So I can't read the codes.

I went to Autozone today and I borrowed a OBD reader.

The code is P0506 - idle RPMs too low.

I did recently change from 5W-20 oil (Amsoil) to 5W-30 oil (Mobil 1).

Do you think that could have lowered the idle RPM ?

I seriously doubt it, especially not enough to throw a code.

I heard cleaning the throttle body might help.

If what could be said mod could be linked to the error, they'll want to charge you or they could even say warrenty is void they may even record it and log it so anywhere you go it';ll show , only mods I go don't effect or I CAN remove befoer I take it to dealership.

Does the x-cal 1 have user adjustable parameters? If so double check that the idle rpm's didn't get changed by mistake. I can adjust mine but I'm not familiar with version 1.

I took apart the throttle body and cleaned it out.

It was full of black stuff at the back.

My idle RPMs appear to be higher now.

No CEL light so far since I cleaned it.

No, but it looks like black tar that collect around the butterfly valve. I suspect it causes the valves to not close properly which caused the idle problem.

What kind of mileage did you have on the car, and how old. I'm just curious so that if this ever happens, I'll remember to check this out.

My car was purchased new around Oct 2004. I have about 28,000 miles on it.

It's very simple to clean and should probably be done routinely.

What did you use. A rag only, or what cleaner? I would think there is some cleaners you would not want used in an intake.

Did you purchase an extended warranty? Because by my math your warranty should have been used up about 8-9 months ago!

I'm pretty sure that would be illegal.
