My Automatic Experience

Hello everyone...well i finally was able to take my auto equipeed "Stang for a good 100 mile drive ! I only have 200 miles on the car...roads here just got cleaned up from the winters salt/sand! I am in the process of breaking it in...i put it through the paces..fast,slow,loads,up and down hills..hard lauches..ect! I have alot of BMR products such as,Chassis tunnel brace,LCA's,Panhard bar/brace! The car has no wheelhop..at least not on any highways around here. I do also have new wider rubber!(255/50/17 Fuzion ZR-!'s)! The car to me handles extremely well and tight! I have owned numerous Fox chassis cars...and this one blows it away! I'm off topic here..forgive me. My impression of the automatic is overall very good! The first three gears are awesome...i did notice the 3-4 shift lag everyone is talking about! Also there is the noticeable sluggishness off the line to about 2000 RPM or so. I do have a HC trap removed...and i have the Predator..but have not installed yet...i hope this cleans up some of the bugs! My car barely squeels tire from standing start, floor to the wood! It just digs out and revs right to 6000,and shifts 1-2-3....4 LOL The old automatics i had driven in earlier mustangs were real dogs as compared to the new Automatic car! I have owned 5spds in the past, and test drove the new'05 in "stick". IMO..the 5spd Stick pulls harder...The new automatic is really nice though and am pleased with the way it shifts so far and the "no Brainer" way you can just relax and enjoy the car without constantly shifting up and down! I used to like that when i was younger...but i guess my age is showing and i'm a little more mellowed out..well sorta...still want more POWER and TORQUE!!!! LOL!

My thoughts exactly. I jumped in my 03 cobra after 400 hard miles in the 05 auto and the cobra feels like it is very old. The auto 05 needs some 4.10's !! I went 14.00@98 at the track this weekend, I WILL have a 12 sec time slip by summer's end.

I've heard that the 4.10's actually hurt the auto's 1/4 mile time. And that you should go with 3.55 gears. I think I will get a torque converter first before messing with the gears and see what happens there.

I'm starting to miss having a stick. Now that the car is broken in and I now drive it a little harder. The adaptive transmission, combined with electronic throttle control, plus over agressive fuel mapping programs really make the car feel sluggish when dropping the hammer after poking along. If you drive it hard right from the start it feels much more natural but if you've been stuck in traffic and only cruising at 25, it takes it awhile to figgure out how to go fast. Also if your cruising 40ish behind a bunch of cars and get an opening, jump on it, you have to practically put it to the floor to get it to down shift. I've been hitting my OD button to pass just so I dont have to floor it.
Don't get me wrong, it's still a great transmission, best I have ever driven atleast. For the kind of driving I do I wouldn't trade it, but I still miss having the stick alot of the time.

This is what I have been thinking about and believe I will do with mine - just a little bump to the manual's stock gears.

Auto's are 3.31 stock, manuals 3.55.

Yeah, I think that is what he meant by "bumping" up to the manuals gearing.

Exactly. I knew what the gearing was, but thanks for the heads up. I'm still not sure what gears I'm gonna get yet, and probably won't until right before I order them and do more research.

But under high throttle conditions it really works well.

I'm not familiar with transmission software. I've always had manual Mustangs. What options are there for previouus auto Mustang transmissions to increase throttle response? What about a torque converter?
