All,

I have been watching (with great interest!) the lively discussions going on in the GT500 forum about the pros and cons of mounting an automatic in that car. While reading it, I got to thinking. Assume for the moment that they do produce the GT500 with an optional automatic transmission. Would this tranny be able to then be mountable in the GT?

I am no expert by any means, and it may be too early to ask this question. But I have also seen much discussion on how the 5 speed auto in the GT is the weak point of that particular powertrain. Since they are mulling over the idea of a GT500 auto, and are definitely putting a performance auto in the Sport Trac Adrenalin, it doesn't seem that much of a stretch to imagine that one or the other could be modified and adapted as a replacement tranny for the GT to beef up the powertrain and remove that weak point. Being sold through FRPP, perhaps?

I know this would be a very expensive upgrade, and not all would want to do it. But with all the interest in supercharging the GT, and all the people who wonder if the stock transmission could handle it, this sounds like a match made in heaven to me.

Your thoughts?

Well, one is a 5.4L, and the other is a 4.6L . . . are the blocks the same? I think they might be.

If that is the case, then the only hurdle would be reprograming the PCM to work with a different trans.

But, having said that, I'm sure somebody will develope a kit for the stock trans to beef it up.
