Mobil 1 5W-20 in 5-quart container FOUND!
Went to walmart today to get 6 qts of Mobil 1 and to my shocked disbelief, found the 5W-20 in a 5-quart jug! This is the first time I have seen 5W-20 in a 5-qt jug anywhere, and I have been looking for the past two years since getting my '05 GT. In fact, there was one stretch for about a month when I could not find Mobil 1 5W-20 at all, even in one-quart bottles - that was scouring 2 local walmarts, 2 AutoZones, and several other auto parts stores. There's always plenty of 10W-30 and 5W-30, but it always seems to be hit or miss with the 5W-20...
So I was super-stoked today when I finally found the 5W-20 in the economical and convenient 5-qt container. There was only one jug in the store, but now I at least know that Mobil does put this stuff in the big jugs. It was $23.62 for the bottle, and $5.97 for the single quart bottles, so buying it in the big jug costs about $4.72/quart. And often Walmart has the 5-quart Mobil 1 jugs on sale for $21, so it is possible to get it even cheaper. Still, it was great to get it even at the regular 5-qt price.

Sorry to rain on your parade. Thanks for looking out though.

The S197 GT needs at least 6 qt with an oil filter change.
I plan to use Supertech 5W-20 ($1.54/qt). There's a 5 year / 60k powertrain warranty, so what the heck. I'm using API SM / ILSAC GF-4 5W-20 so Ford shouldn't be able to say anything bad about this oil unless they can provide me with free Motorcraft 5W-20.

You figured out how to save $20.00 an oil change
So I guess you don't change your oil before 5,000 miles either?
Penny wise and pound foolish.

It's not about saving money, but rather how often you change your engine oil. I've been using Mobil 1 in my 4.6 2V and the 5.4 2V V8 and quite frankly, I haven't noticed any change in gas mileage or performance whatsoever. I've switched to all synthetics in the Crown Vic and it did nothing for gas mileage (Mobil 1 ATF in the 4R70W, Redline gear oil).
The Stang's engine has a 5 year / 60k mile warranty, so for me it will be a 5 year warranty.

It's not the gas mileage that makes a difference, it's how clean the engine is by using it.
I personally wouldn't recommend the Supertech brand. Honestly, why not just use Ford Motorcraft oil. That stuff is pretty cheap at local parts stores... I think it is even cheaper than Castrol and the other names. Here's how I figure oil: if it's good enough for the dealer, it's good enough for me.
Although, one could argue that all oil comes from the same hole in the ground, so what's the difference. But, I think that the "name brand" oil companies put special "additives" and what-not in their oil. It's the same with gasoline: all of it comes from the same place, but the name brands put additives in it.
In the end, it all comes down to preference. I personally will NEVER use Quaker State. Also, now that Pennzoil is owned by QS company, I will never use them again either. For me, its Castrol or factory brand oil for conventional, and Mobil 1 if synthetic.

There was a big thing on BITOG several months ago where gas chromotography tests indicated M1 (15W-50?) used a Group III basestock. In other words, Mobil 1 is the new Castrol Syntec / Valvoline. They are playing games with the "synthetic" marketing much like Castrol did years ago. If you want to pay $4.60/qt for Group III, keep buying the Mobil 1.
I thought about going with the Motorcraft 5w-20, and I may just switch around between Motorcraft and Supertech depending on what's available at the time. Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 is also pretty affordable at $4/qt and I recall that it even contained a small amount of Group V basestock with its Group III basestock. I am using the Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 in my 4.6 2V V8 and can't tell a difference between M1 5W-30. German Castrol 0W-30 yielded about a 1-2 mpg hit though since it is thicker than most synthetic 5W-30s (the 0W part is misleading).
I understand what you're saying about the dirty engine, but 5W-20 at the very least is going to be a synthetic blend or Group III synthetic. Last I checked there weren't any true "dino" Group I/II/II+ 5W-20 formulations.

Odd that the other thread is in the General Mustang Chat forum - the SN95 Mustangs didn't use 5W-20, at least my '95 5.0 liter didn't.
