K&N VS stock dyno pull

hey guys,

I ran my car on the dyno monday as most know but wasn't able to all it to cool well enough on my final runs to make good power. I was holding off 10-15 minutes between runs because well all know how these 05 react when they get too hot.

I was able to get a stock VS stock K&N dyno run in. 7rwhp and 5 rwtq in stock form and the a/f ratio was almost exactly the same. I can say without a doubt that the K&N is the safest CAI on the market for the dead stock car without a tune.

I'm heading back this weekend to get some results with my tuning but I do have a tune for the K&N now as I see how it reacts.

Now I just want to clarify, because I am very new to the modding, so please be gentle....

Doug said that the K&N is by far the safest and that the a/f ratio was nearly identical, this means that, despite the wealth of information to the contrary, the K&N CAI makes good on its claim that no tune is necessary?

I was ready to purchase one after hearing you didn't need a tune (I want a tune eventually, but $ restricts me to one at a time), but then backed off after more than one thread said it was leaning out the a/f ratio.

Before I rush out and buy one, I just want to make sure that I'm getting things right.

I know that there are people out there that just want to toss in only about $300 and no more. With that said I beleive the K&N filter is a good choice but you must understand that by just ditching the stock airbox and replacing it with a conical filter would probably net the same gain. Its worth a shot for some.

If you are willing to spend a bit more money you might as well get a good kit that requires a tune.

Also, those handheld tuners are nice to have anyways; datalogging of all engine sensors, code reading and of course the programming, its worth the $350.

A couple of months back I bougth mine for $215 on Ebay. I plan to add a tune, but still haven't done it, so it's good to hear Doug say that it is safe without one.

I am running k&n with your tune currently and love the setup, be interested to see your dyno results.
If during the dyno you make some mods to your tune for the better be sure to let us current k&n tune owners know

Not bad. Seeing as how the A/F stayed the same it must be a very small difference from stock. IMO go with a CAI that requires a tune and get 20hp or so instead of 7. But for people who absoultly don't want a tune, its a good mod.

I'd like to see some good gains from a tuned K&N. That way all I have to do is reflash it back to stock when I take it to the dealer since the K&N is the only CAI that they won't void the warranty over.

I did a stock pull with all my mods including the K&N intake, i also did a pull with Doug @ BAMACHIPS Torque and Performance Tune, I will post them numbers later on.

Here is the dyno sheet from the pull from last week.

The One in the Blue is the run with the K&N Intake, Underdrive Pulleys, Throttle Body Spacer, Flowmaster Axle-Backs dyno'd @ 294.9 RWHP and 318.4 RWTQ.

Moving onto the Red is adding Doug @ BamaChips 93 Octane Torque Tune producing 302 RWP @ 322.5 RWTQ.

Finally in the green uploads BamaChips 93 Octane Performance Tune producing 301.4 RWHP @ 323.1 RWTQ.

Such a big difference the tuner makes, but I think this is the best that can be made out of the K&N Intake, which is why it does not require tuning, cause you get the best power out of it without one.
