Just installed Hurst shifter and Flowmasters

Yesterday I installled my Flowmaster American Thunder mufflers and had a Hurst short throw shifter installed. I am really pleased with both.

The Flowmaster AT's are a nice set of mufflers. I wanted Borla originally but these were 220 dollars cheaper and sitting in my local performance shop so I decided to go ahead and put them on. They have a much deeper tone to them and a more aggressive sound under acceleration. They are not super loud but they are definately noticeable. I'd like to hear them with an off road x pipe. The burble on deceleration is intoxicating!!

The Hurst shifter is defiately a big difference over stock. I have read about why people don't like them and why some people do on here and to be honest I can agree with both sides. The Hurst looks really cool in the car and it is a Hurst, which I thought was cool. However it is pretty notchy and its hard to find first sometimes. The throws are a lot shorter and the whole gear range is really close together. I wouldn't call the shifts smooth at all either. Overall I like it but I was wondering, do other people with Hursts notice the handle heating up during driving? Also, first gear now is all the way over to the left and has the rubber gromit by the shift boot touching the edge of the shifter column. Is that normal? Fifth gear is now pretty much in the middle too. Any thoughts would be cool. Sorry for the long post!

I have the Hurst and Flowmasters too. Love 'em. Just enough volume without waking all the neighbors.
The Hurst is everything I heard on these forums before I installed it. Notchy, much stiffer, 50% shorter throw and very old school cool.
I can live with the first two negatives. One of the best mods I have done so far. I can feel it going into gear. The factory shifter was like stirring mayonaise with a butter knife.
As far as the centering concern; mine is more centered and I can only guess the cause for yours might be that the offset on the bottom of the stick connector is turned the wrong way. It would have been an easy mistake to make and it was the only installation step that was not straight forward. I actually had to read the instructions a couple of times to be sure to get it right. It's not much of an offset but it might also be the reason you are fishing around for first gear.
You'll like it a lot better when you get that fixed up.

Sweet Torch red, I notice you are from Tuscalosa, maybe those new mufflers will drown out all the crying over the football team in town. Particularly Nov 18.

I also have the Hurst shifter, but I definitely have no issue with gear positions. I have my centering springs set so that I have to actually pull it toward me pretty good to get to first and then toward me pretty hard and down to second. Third is just a palm push forward from second (no miss) and then fourth is straight down from third, no pulling toward me. I have to push to fifth, but I made the spring force outward a little lighter than the 1,2 pull.

Yes the shaft heats up a bit, mostly from the sun as now that we have had cast iron grey skies I have not noticed any heat coming from the shaft.

Make sure you have BLUE Loctite on the two bolts holding the shifter handle! If you don't it will rattle loose on the highway and get really sloppy!
