Indication that Cam phasers have failed?

I'm looking into one more thing in my car before I replace the fuel pump, and that is making sure cam phasers havnt failed or just one of them.

Waht are the indications that a phaser has failed or is failing? Is there a way to test it?

It they are anything like the 5.4 engines in the f150's, they would make the engine sound like a diesel engine at idle when the engine is warm. If you rev it in neutral past 1200 rpm, the knocking sound would go away.
