Something is definately wrong with your install if you have any play in the shifter. Are the upper 2 shifter bolts tight (the ones that hold the chrome shaft on). Pull the shifter cover up, and push the rubber cover down, so you can see everything. Move the shifter handle- if the chrome part moves, but the other one doesn't, then you need to have those 2 nuts re-torqued and they MUST have a LockTite on both of them. If everything up top looks good, then you either have a defective shifter, or somebody forgot to tighten up something underneath. Did they install the 2 plastic bushings in the bottom of the shifter? You have to remove the bushings from the old shifter bottom, and install them in the new shifter bottom, because the new one doesn't come with bushings.

Good luck to you. Sounds like a bad install to me.
