I was at the bone yard the other day and they were giving 10 bucks a piece for them. I thought they were a lot more than that.

Put them on ebay, you should be able to get $65 to $75 each for them.

Spot Platinum is $2,005 per Troy Ounce today (7-14-2008). I guessing that a Cat has about 1/10 of a Troy Ounce of Platinum, so the raw material is worth $2,005/10 = $201. The cost + profit to extract that metal is therefore $120?

U.S. automakers no longer use platinum in catalytic converters. They switched over to palladium because of costs (about 1/4 the cost of platinum). That is why you are not being offered the big bucks you are expecting. Some foreign automakers (specifically Toyota) still use mostly platinum.

How does that work when there are 2 of them welded in the h-pipe. I can believe they want $1200 for a new stock H pipe with both cats.

I just read the newspaper in Va Bch while visiting my parents and saw they arrested a few poeple for stealing cats off of peoples' cars and cashing them in. I guess they do have some value for people to go that far.
