My plan: Mobil1 every 5k until 35k miles. Then Amsoil every 15k miles, filter every 5k miles.

5K

We beat the crap out of our troop cars and we do oil changes every 5k. If a Crown Vic can survive 100K miles of 120+ mph sprints and medians at 45 mph in 2.5 - 3 years on what the state can find at the cheapest price, I'd be willing to bet our Mustangs can last much longer on good stuff.

Causing extra wear by changing sooner than 5K?

i think the post was saying your throwing away money at a 5k interval. then if you wait till longer to change you are causing extra wear. Not that there is extra wear by changing sooner. i am seriously thinking i am going to have my oil tested and see what it looks like after 5.

I've always done both filter and oil at 2,500 miles but I'm switching to 5,000 for both. Using the Motorcraft oil and the upgraded AC filter.

No, the poster was saying that changing oil too frequently will increase engine wear.

Bingo. That is what I said. That is what I meant. I know it is a little counter-intuitive. Of course I should have made it a bit clearer that I was only speaking about NA cars. FI cars do need to be a bit more cautious about frequency of oil changes.

Search this website for a more in depth discussion, or Google "Bob the oil guy" or several other sites. Don't bother with ones that are trying to sell you something.

Basically new oil has chemicals that can act acidic. They burn off relatively quickly, but by changing your oil more frequently they do more damage. Of course they don't do as much damage as oil that is strewn with contaminant because of a poor filter or being run excessively.

Most syns can run 12-15000 miles before they Need to be changed. I change mine at 10000 just for the simplicity of nice round numbers (10, 20, 30) with a filter change 1/2 way through the cycle. That way I get my moneys worth and still feel well within the "safe zone." Just one man's informed opinion.
