How do you know when to clean/replace your air filter?

I have JLT S&B Cone air filter.

How do you know when to clean or replace it?

When it turns a dark color?

oh yeah, mine went from a nice red to a dark maroon and you can just tell it is time to clean it. if it is still a nice red color then it is ok but most suggest to clean the filter everytime you change the oil
