Mid mount with exhaust shields for the gas tanks would be ideal. You don't need to use a canister style muffler either. Round 4" mufflers would be ideal. I really want to give this a try.

So maybe this is a dumb question but do mufflers get that much hotter than the rest of the pipes?

No, mufflers won't get any hotter than the rest of the pipes. The cats get SUPER hot, (I've even seen some that were glowing red one time) but the rest of the system is all about the same temp.

I've cut my H-pipe completely off, and replaced it with two, 24" Glasspacks. I removed my 'mufflers' and just put tips on it.

Yes I'd like to see how you like it too. I can't seem to find any 4in round style mufflers. Similiar to the FRPP/Borlas just maybe a little smaller so they'll fit.

Anybody?

.My Vibrant resonators came in, check em out. They're almost exactly 12" long from end to end, 4" in diameter on the thicker part and the ID of the 2 ends is a little over 2.5". Should be easy to cut a section out of the over axle pipes, slip the 2 ends in and lay a bead of weld around the ends.

If those resonators are 4" in diameter, couldnt we fit a set of original 40 series flows under there then? They are 4" thick.

Wait, nevermind....it wouldnt clear the driveshaft.

let us know how it goes, i am very interested in doing this to mine, the drone is a tad annoying.

Thats why it was poppy.... SLP's are like a typical resonator if I'm not mistaken. All resonator tips have some sort of fiberglass in them, which cause that popping noise. SLP's are basically a re-engineered glass pack/ resonator tip. When the fiberglass gets hot, they pop (like redneck pickup trucks). I have the straight through like an SLP, but minus the fiberglass, therefore no popping. It sounds sooooooooo bad ***! To test it out, just remove your mufflers and let the stock pipe hang, like a hot rod "dump" after the axel. Don't worry, it won't hurt anything and H-Pipe is still pretty secure wihtout the mufflers. I drove around like that for about a month before I actually got around to clamping on the straight pipe with 4" diameter, 12" long chrome tips on it. The stock mufflers just unbolt in a few spots and slide off, so it's friggin easy to experiment with this. This is one of the coolest sounding Mustangs I have owned and it was on the cheep end to achieve that sound. No drone while going down the highway eithor! When I did add the 4" tips, the tone got higher in pitch and sounded even better! Hey, it's easy enough to pull them off to experiment, so why not?

Thanks about the Viper too! they are a BLAST!!!!!!!!!

Yes I did the same thing for awhile (letting the over the axle pipes hang) But the Loud Mouths are just straight pipes, nothing more. The SLPs I ordered have fiberglass in them so we'll see.

Thats what I was talking about in my post. It's the same thing.... My "Straight Through" pipes, just bolted in place of the where the stock mufflers were and still have the option of mounting the stock mufflers if ever needed.

ok, cool, so at least you can compare and see what oyu like best. I will say that the tone got higher in pitch when I got my pipes running out the back, like I said.... It has a bit of a "Ferrari Whine" to it. Whatever you do, it will sound better than stock of course and be more fun to drive.

I would really like to see how a borla style system would sound placed in the middle location. This just seem to me that thats where the muffler should be. Even the exhaust guy said thats where they should be but that he wouldn t wanna cut up the FRPPs which neither do i lol I might be looking for a muffler with similiar design to the FRPPs that WILL fit in the middle. I never realized how big the FRPP/Borlas really are!
A middle location would be interesting, like on all the ol' 5.0's. However, when you get technical about drag racing and weight distribution, you have 25lbs of muffler weight to the far rear of the car above the rear tires, instead of the front area of the car. I wonder if Ford was thinking on a more detailed engineering scale about weight distribution. The battery is also on the other side (compared to the 5.0's) and it's as far back towards the firewall as possible to distrubute the weight to the rear. This must be what was on the Ford engineers minds when designing the cars. Pull all the weight as far back as possible.

Imagine if your 40lb battery was located up forward, next to the front bumper and the mufflers were moved forward towards the motor.... more rear wheel spin would occur if this was the case.

Id be very impressed if any of those thoughts when through a ford engineers mind. lol If they really were worried about that they should have moved it to the trunk! but that would never happen

Well, I think the trunk is more of an unlikely spot since the battery does let off acid fumes and the seats fold down in the back, which "theoretically" would allow fumes to pass through the cabin. In drag racing, for a trunk mounted battery, you must have in a box. Moving the battery to the other side of the car (on the dominant tire side, right rear tire) and setting it as far back as possible is exactly what should be done for a consumer car. I think that is what was on their minds. I have seen a Lincoln (something or another) car with a trunk mounted battery, but I don't remember exactly how it was set up. I don't think the back seats folded down eithor, making it a safely contained area for battery fumes with a trunk mount. Ford was trying to be more "practicle" in their design I think.
