GT500 wheels - tire sizes?

According to Hoosier they have a 25.3" diameter and 11.6" section width. I want a much smaller diameter since I can't change rear gears.
295's are may be too wide with the stock strut assembly, but I'm installing a true coilover strut with much more clearance. Hell, if there's still room, I'll try a 315!
I've seen several SN95's at the track with 295/40/17's Kumhos up front.
