Over the course of an entire tank of gas, you should have a pretty accurate reading of the driving you did that tank.

Mine seems pretty accurate. I reset it every fillup, and compare it to what my gas receipt indicates. Oddly, the fuel consumption always reads low on the car though. I've had fillups of a bit over 14 gallons, and the dash says just over 13 used.

the computer does a really good job, ive never had it off more than .2 gallons when filling up compared to gallons used. if it were to ever be more than that i'd tell the attendendant he was ripping me off at the pump.

the computer knows how much fuel is used by counting the number of times the injectors pulse and at what duty cycle.

as far as my mpg goes its been in the single didgets here for weeks and i let it warm up for 15 minutes twice a day, and im getting 12.5.

in warmer weather with only a 3 to 5 minute warm up i average around
19.

at the track running laps i get around 8

and yes i almost always do at least a 3 min warm up

Why 3 minute warm up in warm weather? Not knocking you, just wondering if there is a reason for this? I let mine warm up for about one minute if it is cold out (below 30F), and about 20 seconds if it is warm out. More than that and I think I'm just wasting gas.

just to get the juices flowing and to get some heat in the pistons so they fit the bore better

the race motors that ive had over the years would never idle cold, still dont!!(huge cams/ heads/ carbs ect) and i used to just keep my foot on the gas and drive them untill they warmed up. i had an engine builder friend who convinced me to let it warm up before puttting a load on it and after i did that the motors needed fewer ring jobs than before i started letting them warm up. like from every year to every other year

so i guess its just habbit, like putting on my seat belt

Got it, I did the same with the race motors I had when I still drag raced. I consider those a little different breed of engine though. Much looser tolerances and such. Loose engine = power, but they wear out quicker. With the tight tolerances of a stock motor, not so much worry about warm up period. Don't get me wrong, I don't go out and beat on it until it is fully warmed up no matter the outside temp. I just drive it easy until then.
