My tune is designed to run 93 octane. Can you use a lower octane with a turbo? Sure, since in CA, the tune would have to be written for 91 octane since that's the highest they have over there.

But why would you want a turbo and not benefit from the added power by using 93 octane? Plus, I get better gas mileage than I used to when the car was stock. I used to get 19 MPG... on the way to work today, I average 23.4 MPH with 50/50 highway and city driving, but still end up with 21 when you figure in the fooling around.

If it's a price concern, 93 octane is cheaper than it used to be compared to 87 octane.

When gas was .99, 1.09, and 1.19... 93 octane was 20% more expensive than 87 octane.

With gas 3.99, 4.09, and 4.19... 93 octane is only 5% more expensive than 87 octane.

It's the first $60 that hurts when filling up the tank... what's another 3 bucks?

good point about the 3 bucks. Mostly just wondering. I figure you will lose a few hp running the 87 but your already gaining well over 100 with the turbo.

The US should change to only making premium fuel. And older 87 cars should just bump timing, and then all new cars should come from factory set for premium.

An increase of even 1mpg accorss the entire US population fleet would be huge help in the oil demand.

You know the sad thing? If they could drop 2/3rds of the fuel grades they have to make, premium fuel would end up being the same cost or possibly cheaper than the "old cheap stuff" just because it would simplify the refining/storing/transporting aspects of it.

While we are at it, why don't we simplify it a bit further? Let's develop two blends of gasoline: a standard grade used in 80% of the country that doesn't have smog issues and a smog grade for California and the other areas that are currently require using special blends. States, counties or cities would be able to require the smog blend, but they couldn't mandate any special blends.

Do you know how much cheaper gas would be if the the refineries only had to worry about creating two basic blends of fuel? It would really help California and the other smog areas out, but I really doubt they would be willing to give up control over their "special blends".

If my memory is working (no promises!), there are something like 23 different smog blends across the country right now. You can't tell me that each of these blends is really required! Figure out which one works best at reducing smog and make THAT blend "the" smog blend and drop the rest!

The Powerhouse kit is a very good kit. I think the THP and Powerhouse kits are the best available.

Turbo Update:

I just removed the boost controller and was running with the spring that came with the wastegate for a week until I could remove the wastegate and change the spring.

The wastegate came with a .4 bar (5.802 psi) spring and my boost gauge was going to just below 5 psi. Strange...

JR Granatelli sent me two additional springs... a .5 bar (7.252 psi) and a .6 bar (8.702 psi).

I wanted about 8.5 psi, so I installed the 8.702 psi spring. But my gauge was only going to just over 7.5 or so. WTF??

I called Tial and found out that it's normal to have a pressure drop in the intercooler and my loss is just over 1.0 psi.

So... I ordered the .7 bar (10.153 psi) spring and I'm currently waiting for that to be delivered. That will take me somewhere between 8.5 and 9.0 psi... The tune was designed to be safe up to 10 psi, so I should be right where I need to be.

Other than messing with the spring and learning about the pressure drop, I've had no other issues... still running strong!
