I'm ready to get 4.10s put in. I want them in now so I have a month to break them in before I start beating on them at the track on April 1st.

I asked around who does gears locally. MikeM has a guy that did his at the guy's house (he's a Ford mechanic) for $240 in labor. Trouble is with that guy is that this is my only car and I can't leave it there for a few days so he can install them after work when he gets home. It's about a half hour away and I'd have no way of getting around. Plus if they're not put in right, I don't want to have to chase him down.

I talked to a kid who's dad used to own a now defunct Mustang pro shop here in town and he gave me the name of a transmission shop that works on all of his cars and they're real good at it. I just called the shop and they told me $400 for installation. At this place I can get it done same day.

I guess if it just came down to $160 difference, I'd rather have an old timer who installs these things every day put em in and have peace of mind they were done right.

The guy told me to order the gears and make an appoinment. All I need is the Ford Racing 4.10 gear set right? I don't need the install kit? I know Mike didn't need his. What kind and how much gear fluid I need? Anything else I need?

Edited to add: I just found a place called K&C Performance in Londonderry that is rumored to do installs for $200. Good thing is I have someone at work that lives right near there so I can get picked up/dropped off. Any of you NH guys heard of them?

Hey Dustin,

The beauty of this would be that you know where he lives.

Gears don't need to be broken in. They are gears.

That isnt always true Senior Freak.

Dustin, have you even called around to get some install rates? I paid about $250 and the car was done in 2 hours.

Anybody know what dealers are charging for an install? Get hooked up with a mechanic that works there and have him say it's bad, tell them you'll pay the difference for the 4:10's and let the warranty pick up the install price. Is that cheating the system??????

Im sorry but I dont see much wrong with that statement. If the "hookup" doesnt have much care for "cheating the system" then what does it matter? It doesnt....

Have you talked to Tim's performance on pond st.? Thay do a lot of stuff. I don't know much about the old 5.0 shop. What is the tranny shop they use? I know a lot of the garages in the area, but not the performance shops. If you need a ride I might be able to help.

It was Durabuild Transmission downtown across the street from Mafee's. I already ordered the gears. When they get here I'll make some calls. I should be all set on a ride.

I knew they weren't any good when he tried to tell me that the install was 400 and he's never seen a set of Ford gears that cost less than $600 and was astonished when I said they were $200 out of any magazine. The guy was either trying to rip me off or he obviously hadn't done too many gears.

Dustin I feel you made a mistake by not purchasing the gears from installer.
If they whine he can always blame the gears and you have no recourse.
You have been talking about this for months and I thought by this time you would have explored all the installers and had them installed by now. As for leaving the car overnight rent a car from Enterprise as I did. Only 50 or so bucks. They will even pick you up at his shop. The guy told me to get the parts myself

If I go to another place and it comes down to it I'll sell the gears I bought on the for sale forum.

10 years ago Durabuild wasn't the best. I don't know what they are like now. If they are FRP gears an experienced installer shouldn't have a problem. I know back in the late '90s a lot of the police cars had to have the gears changed in our shop and the guys got real good at it. I think most of them went to Gladstone Ford.
