Gears Install vs. Rear End Rebuild: Difference?
Gears Install vs. Rear End Rebuild: Difference?
For a while now I've had a howling noise coming from the rear end of my car. It's one of those things that gradually got louder and louder but since it was gradual I never really noticed until it became loud enough to make me turn up the radio to hear over it. You can hear it at low speeds but it's a problem primarily between 65-75 MPH where it is very distracting and makes a bit of a wub-wub-wub rhythmic sound. I don't feel any vibration and it's not affecting the car as far as I can tell other than the sound.
A nearby shop took it for a drive and confirmed it was the rear end but said they couldn't pinpoint what it was until they actually got it on a lift and pulled the cover off, to the tune of 2 hours of labor. They said they would probably do a rear-end rebuild. My diagnosis from reading online points toward a bearing, either pinion or axle.
My question is this: does installing new gears, say upgrading to 4.10s with the installation kit from American Muscle, include what goes into a rear-end rebuild? I'm trying to understand exactly what a "rear-end rebuild" entails.

They would have to pull the gears to Chang the bearings'. So if changing gear sets is on your mod list the would be the time to do it. Of course you would still Ned to buy the bearings

If you have plans to do a set of gears, I would also recommend getting the bearing and installation kit. We kit these items together and this would basically finish up a rear end rebuild!
I hope this helps. Hit me up if you have any questions or need some assistance!

It definitely sounds like something is going on in your rear end. There's so many moving items in the rear end, so it's really hard to pin point exactly what could be causing this issue! I would check the axles and make sure nothings bent there and then open up the differential.
