Believe me I would love to do both, but can only afford one or the other right now. I was just curious which would result in the greatest acceleration gain. Thanks for the help.

Gears...... since you're comparing gears to a driveshaft, I'm assuming you've factored the labor to install the gears too.

Well that’s it. They will both run roughly the same price so I was looking for the best result. I have never been in a Mustang with a deeper gear so I don’t know what to expect.

Def do the gears...... remember this: unless you do HUGE amounts of hiway driving, DON'T FEAR THE GEAR! 4.10s with a manual trans is great; 373s for an auto is great.

Here is the deal.. factor in atleast 300 for install on the gears. (PLEASE! By a reputable shop and NOT your backyard job because the gears WILL whine and you WILL not like them. Additionally, make sure they use the friction modifier, it's worth bringing it to a shop that charges you 350 over Bobs Truck and Tire saturday morning gear special for $199.99 with free tire rotation and perm.)

Which is more affordable right now after that included?

Gears, install kit, royal purple oil, we sell for 275-300 depending on what ratio. With 300 dollars it will put you between $575-600.

Oddly enough, our Coast Aluminum Driveshafts run $589.99 shipped to the door, and can be installed by the typical do-it-yourselfer.

It's a tough battle, especially being identically priced... we push our driveshafts we sell hard, and even I agree... I'd love to sell you a driveshaft, but the gears make the driveshaft effects worthwhile.

Go with the gears. Immediately there-after when funds are available... go for the driveshaft!

Does the 4:10 gear make first gear pretty much unusable? ("granny gear"?)

Gears first then save for the drive shaft. Maybe the price will come down by then.

NO! You will love 4:10's and 5th gear is only a couple hundred rpms more at 70 so you aren't going to take a huge hit on gas mileage. Your gas mileage will suffer at first though because you will have a hard time keeping from matting it all the time and you will also notice that your rear tire wear isn't as good as it was before the gear swap!

My God-get the gears! Any improvment with a drive shaft is all in a persons mind, "I spent a ton for this driveshaft-it has to make my car faster".

I believe it was posted elsewhere that in 5th gear, 4.10 rear becomes an effective 2.79 rear end ratio. My 69 has 2.79 gears and that is a great ratio for the highway. Based on that info alone, I have been thinking of doing FRPP 4.10 gears but then I don't drive my car all that much either but 4.10 gears are a blast in Rich's car.
